About this business

With a menu full of flavorful dishes, all served without a pinch of pretension, Dosa has established itself as one of the top choices for those seeking a bite to eat in the Mission District. The menu specializes in South Indian dishes, especially in the restaurant's namesake dish, the dosa. In addition to the fresh samplings on the plate, this restaurant is also famed for its excellent wine menu, and the pairings that serve to bring out the best of both food and drink. Even with so many other restaurants in the area, DOSA is... read more

Well Deserved Praise – I'm of South Indian origin and I've been going to Dosa almost once or twice a month for the past 8 months since I first discoverd it. I go back with all my Indian brethren and we're never ever dissapointed. The dosas are amazing, the sambar is better than anything I've ever had and the non-veg dishes are outstanding. My favorite is the Prawn Coconut, but the Tamil Lamb is a pretty close second. They also have great salads, which is very unusual for an Indian restaurant and a phenomenal wine list that p... read more

Authentic Hipness! – My boyfriend and I always sit at the bar since we usually arrive around rush hour. It?s a great way to have an easy meal at Dosa. The bar tenders are well informed and always take great care of us. Get the Organic Green & Mango Salad, Chennai Chicken and the Tamil Lamb Curry with a side of raita. For you vegetarians, try the Mung Sprout Salad (or any salad they have on the menu), the Dahi Vada and the Rava Masala Dosa. Pair it with nice cool glass of a Riesling Kabinett, which balances the spices amazing... read more

Overrated – I've been here 3 times and can believe I now have an accurate rating - it's overrated. The last time I was here we had a reservation and still waited over an hour for our table. Finally we were given the worst table in the house next to the door with the hostesses standing behind us. Service was mediocre - she had almost nothing to say about the menu except for doing a good job of selling the most expensive wine. Appetizers were boring, dosas were bland. Prices are simply out of whack for an indian restuarant. I ... read more

Terrible – When I saw that the Chron named Dosa as one of the top 10 restaurants of 2006, I almost dropped the paper. Sure, it's got the right location and the right clientele (Mission hipsters, anyone?) but the food is nothing short of terrible. The chai was awful, the bhatura arrived cold and deflated, and the tomato chutney tastes more like Ragu than anything you'd get out of India. I'll take the long wait and plastic sporks at Vic's anytime.

Delectable Cravings! – I went to Dosa three times last weekend. The manager or the owner was kind enough to let 6 of us in a minute before opening. I was craving great South Indian food and this place certainly hits the spot. It's casual yet very charming and the cocktails were seductively great that none of us could stop at one. Everything we had worked perfectly! My mate and I had to go back several times that week because once you crave the food there is absolutely nothing like it anywhere else. Everyone there was very wa... read more

Best Indian in the Bay Area – My favorite spot in the Bay Area. Much better quality than the hole-in-the-wall disgusting swill you get at most of the other Indian places all over the Bay Area. I'm South Indian though I grew up here, and I know that Dosa makes their food fresh everyday since you can certainly taste it. The owners are always wonderfully caring when I've gone there and the wine list is affordable and outstanding.

Delicious – I've never had South Indian food until I came to Dosa. It was a pleasant surprise. The lamb curry is spicy and flavorful. My favorite dosa is the masala dosa - so very creamy (potatoes, cashews, spices) - I wanted to horde it all for myself. The service is inconsistent - the first waitress we had was a doll, even on a super busy night but the second thought she was too cool for school and was more interested in gossiping. Overall, definitely worth a try! I plan on going back and getting the masala dosa and not sh... read more

The hype is TRUE! – What a treat this place is! I know it's good when I become aware while I'm eating that I am both so happy to have such deliciousness and also so sad it has to end! Please treat yourself to their masala dosa.
