Dixie Cafe on Poplar is one of the nastiest places I've ever worked. There's bugs everywhere all in the kitchen near the bread they crawl around all the time but that's what the managers don't want the public to know. The people in the kitchen that deal with your food, they don't wear gloves so your tenders they touch with their bear hands the okra fries anything they come in contact with their hands that aren't covered with anything to keep the germs away from the customers. Dixie Cafe has a great down-home menu with consistent quality and service. I wouldn't refer to it as "soul food" but more country fare, with some good alternative items as well.
