This can be either a great or terribly slow airport depending on arrival times. Staff in generally friendly however hour and a half in customs plus half an hour wait on plane till customs 'cleared' which meant our bags missed the connecting flight. However last time I came on a different time flight we were about 5th in line at customs and beat our bags to the carousel it was great.
The reason I said fair is because it needs some major upgrades, I've never been to a airport that you have to get on a shuttle to get your luggage, and Baggage Claim is way to small .
The American Airline staff were wonderful. We have had a long 24 hours with a plane taken out of service in Maui and then trying to get home. In the Maui airport they tried very hard to get us home but messed up on a connection. When we got to Honolulu the crew got right on it and we were able to get home as planned.
