Past his prime. Mom had an infection and he took out too much of her hip to reinsert a new one and she’s wheelchair bound now. He thought that was a good enough decision because she’s old. Surgery was haphazard and unplanned. He is past his prime for sure.
I developed bilateral progressive osteoarthritis of both hips. A terrible condition. I was extremely fortunate to have had a friend have his surgery with Dr Mears. I was examined and he determined I needed to have both hips undergo replacement surgery. Dr. Mears performed a minimally invasive total hip replacement in October 2019. Three weeks postop I developed severe pain and difficulty ambulating. Dr. Mears was insistent that this was not due to the implants. After three months of no improvement and a seemingly lack of concern on Dr. Mears part, I sought a second opinion. It was the opinion of the consulting surgeon that there was a problem with the acetabular component. A revision procedure was recommended. Dr Mears did my pelvis fusion after a horse landed on me. He was excellent and I really am happy with his work!
Dr. Mears did a total hip on me and I needed a revision 3 years later. Not exactly what one would call quality work!
I like to add to a review I originally did on 4-18-16. After going to multiple Doctors about the injury Mears did to me. I found out Mears made my leg much longer during his surgery and thus severely stretched 3 tendons in my leg which in turn basically destroyed a leg muscle after so much time elapsing. I in turn wrote 2 letters to him about what I found and would appreciate a response. He ignored me and basically left me to suffer. Hip,hip,hooray!!! I had a total hip replacement on July 29, 2019 by Dr. Dana Mears at UPMC Shadyside. I am amazed at how little pain was involved and how quickly I have recuperated from the surgery. This is the go-to doctor and hospital for hip surgery.
I have been a patient since 1989. Reconstructed hip and pelvis, (abduction/reduction) total hip replacement, revision. I couldn't have been more fortunate being life flighted to UPMC Presby and landing Dr. Mears. It took his skill and expertise to treat me. Dr. Mears is amazing! He did my right knee replacement in 2014 and now the left 2017. I highly recommend Dr. Mears. He’s outstanding!
