"CAFE HELL" – Cute place, but really disapointed shortly after sitting down. Sevice slow and they didn't even care if we where there. If your in the neigborhood DON'T stop at Cafe Nell!
Disappointed with Cafe Nell - bad service and food – I had walked by this place twice after 1st Thurs the other night and recommended my friend have her bday party there. The atmosphere is charming. It reminded me of a cafe in Europe. Went with a large party last Sat night so I was thinking it was our size that threw the wait staff off?? Then we got our food and I decided to not recommend this restaurant to anyone else. We got our apps and our dinner at the same time. The anchovie on toast was really pretty bad. Extremely fi... read more
Ambivalent staff but cute spot – We've tried this place a few times as we are from the "hood" and it's convenient. Again tonight we tried. Sat for 15 mintues at the bar before our presence was noticed. Got drinks. Were not offered a menu. Ever. Staff all milling around, looking frustrated and busy. Bartender admitted to being "frazzled", but never did ask us if we wanted a menu, or offer to refresh our drinks. So we decided this was not the "spot", even though we wanted it to be, and asked for our check. At which point were ... read more
Horrible Experience – How can a $50 gift certificate from a friend to a restaurant be a bad thing? When the restaurant is Cafe Nell. Two hour wait (with a half full restaurant) for a tasteless meal. You'd think that a free night out be a happy experience, but that wasn't possible here. Portland has far, far too many great places to bother with this stinker.
Fantastic Sidewalk Cafe – I had read some reviews of Cafe Nell, but had not been by to try it yet. Then when I tasted the chef's entry in the Portland Iron Chef competition (he won the people's choice to compete next year for Portland's Iron Chef), I went for brunch the next day (Sunday). The cafe is really cute. The food was excellent. Nice range from healthy to indulgent. Very moderately priced. Great cocktail list. For brunch there were 5 bellinis, a ramos gin fizz, a couple of other fizzes. Very fun. Great wine list. The... read more
Good food, questionable service – I went to Cafe Nell for breakfast on a weekday, which may be when they have less-experienced staff. The food was really exceptional ... a very creative menu, beautifully-executed. The potatoes were particularly good, I thought ... crispy on the outside, very tender inside. The omelette I had was the French style I prefer, whcih is "runnier" than a lot of people like, so I imagine they get more complaints than compliments, but I loved it. Our waiter, however, could have been much better ... a... read more
Breakfast you bet! – Sous Chef Nick Dellinger is making his mark on the breakfast and lunch trade at Cafe Nell. Nick's attention to detail shows in his well made and tasty creations. Nothing other worldly, just darn good food which is displayed nicely. Portions are more than adequate but not overly large. Both my wife's and my meal was excellent. I enjoyed the Huevos Rancheros and could only complain that I would have liked the black beans to have been a little mushier, personal taste. My wife had the spinach and mushroom om... read more
Neighborhood brasserie satisfies with Northwest-influenced French fare. – A thick wall embedded with a cheery red fireplace splits the classy, dark wood-and-mirrored dining room from the chic bar at this crowded neighborhood cafe. The crowd--an eclectic mix of affluent West hills residents mingling with nearby studio dwellers--come to be impressed by Nell's fundamental, comfort food-driven menu. Morning fare translates into classics like a breakfast BLT or brioche French toast, for midday and evening fare, while staples such... read more
Super Cute! – I had a great time here at this little hideaway in NW. The place was very cute inside, and I loved the bar. I liked the clientele too... they were not the type that was trying too hard to be chic, they just kinda were. The food was good, but I'm all about ambience and experience, so that's what I remember most of. I will definitely be back, and I would definitely recommend it to everyone (everyone who's cool, that is ;-) ).
