Filter only lasted about 2.5 years although the HM-250 purifier was rarely used. Although Austin Air touts a 5 year warranty period for the filter, the prorated price of an (expensive!) replacement filter rises to 70% of the retail price after 2 years, leaving the owner with replacement filter bill of over $145. Been using an Austin Air for 2 years now. Found one at a rummage sale for $10 before I knew anything about it. I just needed an air purifier at the time and thought I could get lucky and find a decent used one. When I plugged the thing in a foul odor came from the unit. I thought I had wasted $10. I opened up the unit, and realized the outside filter was what was causing the odor. Went online to buy a new filter, realized that if I could get this thing working I saved $500. This is such a wonderful company. I just purchased an allergy machine last December. We moved to a new house and found that it needed to be replaced within 6 months of using it. So, we got the filter at a discounted rate - thank goodness. Now, 1.5 months later, our filter needs to be replaced yet again. The company is giving me a new, better, healthmate filter at no charge, just shipping. I am so happy!
