I just got a call from American Helping Hands, and they told me about how good they are and that I could check them out on Better Business Bureau. Well, I checked them out, and the stories below are quite upsetting.

Business response:

We are sorry you only gave us a 1 star review. Most of our negative reviews are from several years ago. We have had a number of personnel changes and our company is different now. We have thousands of satisfied customers who have done business with us for many, many years. If you give us another chance we will do everything we can to make sure you have a good experience with us. Thank you for your comments.

I, too, agree that this company takes advantage of the elderly. They call people who are desperate for any communication with anyone and sell them things they absolutely cannot afford (and are certainly not worth the price). Once they start buying from them, they call and call and call and the price goes up and up and up. No, I do not need to hear the recording. I know my mother agrees to the sale. However, she SHOULDN'T. If this is such a legitimate business, try selling to middle age people who can actually afford your pro... read more

We have bought from AHH for many years and have always gotten what was ordered. Yes, they might be more expensive than a store but we are trying to help others in need. We don't always buy when they call as they have a very limited amount of things to buy. Appreciate the people to be able to be a part of our working society and making a contribution as they are able.

Business response:

Thank you Ms. ****, without kind people like you we could not provide employment opportunities to people who really need them. It is a real boost to their self-esteem and enables them to better provide for themselves and their families.

I have been a customer of American Helping Hands for many years. I realize their products might cost more but have found them to be of better quality than the name brand products. Especially good are their frozen storage bags and their plastic wrap. Name brands can't compare.

Business response:

Thank you Mr. *****, I will share your kind words with everyone here.

American Helping Hands, ******************************************** - *************,(***) ********. Sent my wife 4 - Insulated Gorcery bags and 2 - freezer bags - Assortment (20/20/20) for a cost of $205.00 according to the payment stub. My wife ordered these on 29-Sep-17. On that day my wife **************** was in Houston Methodist Hospital having a heart valve replaced. After a three months of being in and out of hospitals. This is a scam, at the very least criminal mail fraud. I will not pay for this and if they want th... read more

Business response:

Mrs ******* has been a customer since 2013. On Sept 29, 2017 she spoke to one of our sales reps and placed this order. We have a recording of this sales call. Very sorry to hear Mrs, ******* is sick and we certainly wish her a speedy recovery. Mr ******* is welcome to return these products and we will close this account as soon as they are received.

They sold my 76 year old aunt, Ella H., like 36 freezer bags for $36. That is too much for bags. They wasn't even zip lock. They were the ones you push together with your fingers. She didn't even remember ordering them at first. She didn't know what she had brought. We will be requesting to be removed from their calling list. I feel like they are taking advance of people. We can buy these for almost 90% cheaper than what they are charging.

Business response:

Sorry Ms **** is unhappy. Our products do cost somewhat more than the store. They are sent out on the honor system and the money helps employ disabled Americans. We will be happy to add Ms ****'s aunt to our internal Do Not Call list and she is welcome to return the product. If her aunt is having problems she may want to consider adding her number to the Federal DNC. This will prevent any other companies from calling her. Please call 877-275-7317 with your aunts phone number and we will be happy to put it on our internal DNC... read more

I have to question the BBB support of this company. I, too, was cold called for a donation for trash bags to support the blind. I have now investigated this company, which doesn't show up on any charity review website. I checked JustGive.org, Guidestart, and several other charity checklists...this company doesn't exist. There is no breakout of how the funds are distributed or any other information on their website. This is a scam. I don't know if any of the$65.00 for 60 thin trash bags goest to any blind person; however, I d... read more

Business response:

We are not a charity. That is the very first thing we tell people we call. We do provide jobs for people with physical, mental or emotional disabilities. In addition, we sell products that are manufactured, assembled and/or packaged at sheltered workshops around the country.

Glad a company like this is out there. I have bought two items so far and will consider others in the future. The trash bags were fine first time around and my second order was a U.S. Flag....it looks wonderful. I know I am helping a charitable organization and can buy these products "cheaper" elsewhere. But to pay a fair wage and to give jobs to truly disadvantaged - many would have trouble finding work elsewhere - and to get a good product to boot. It is a win-win. God Bless and keep up the good work. I do not work for Ame... read more

I believe this company targets the elderly. Selling a tote bag for $50 to my mother with dementia, who was only able to answer their questions confirming her name and address. She cannot afford to pay for her own care and can definitely not afford a $50 tote bag.

Business response:

You may return the product. You can not always tell when someone has dementia. We do record all our sales calls and Mrs. ***** sounds fine.
