I made a very simple request — just a water cap, not even the water itself. But I was told no, unless I make a purchase. Really? Has it come to the point where even something this basic is off-limits without a receipt?

I was sitting in the lobby of my office building which includes the Starbucks. I was sharing a snack with a coworker in the furthest corner of the Starbucks level, and there were maybe 15 open spots in the area. One of the workers came up to me and my coworker and asked if we were planning on buying anything. When I said no, she said the section was for Starbucks customers only, and told us we should move to the downstairs area if we weren’t planning on buying anything. I had a very unpleasant experience at this Starbucks. I was about to buy a coffee when I received a phone call. While I was on the call, an employee came over and told me to leave, saying that I hadn’t made a purchase. However, right next to me, there was someone eating a takeout meal from another place, and they were not asked to leave. When I questioned the employee about this inconsistency, they simply said they hadn’t noticed. This kind of unfair treatment is completely unacceptable.
