This Upper East Side sushi bar is not one of those places where pseudo or watered down versions of sushi make their way to your plate. You get to eat the real stuff here. The sign displayed at the entrance says "today's special, trust me". And you will more than trust the chef for the delectable fresh seafood. The Omakase menu changes daily but has some regular favorites. The decor is minimalist, almost non-existent except for some bamboo that serves as the only adornment. Sasabune is the place to be for authentic sushi.

MEDIOCRE all the way – Everyone seems to be calling this an amazing SUSHI joint.. but it was totally MEDIOCRE. The temperature of the rice was a little too warm and the nigiri (sushi) wasn't shaped nicely. I think the customers feel special at this joint because the menu is Omakase(pre-fix) ONLY. Also, the white small plates made me feel like I was at a caroussel sushi joint. Two of us ordered a small bottle of beer each and the bill came out to be around $220 together with tax and tip. NOT worth the price.
Amazing Sushi at a Great Value – I've tried many of the mainstream upscale Japanese restaurants in NYC and finally decided to go for a more delicate/authentic experience. After doing much review, I decided to go to Sasabune on a Saturday for their famous Omakase. The reservation was made for 7, but after being stuck in traffic, we were delighted to when we were seated promptly at 8. We were asked if we wanted to order drinks, what we didn't want to eat. Once these questions were answered, the show began. Sushi were served in... read more
Sushi so good you start to crave it!!!!! – Sit at the expanded sushi bar (try lunchtime- not so crowded) and get ready for an amazing experience- from the starter of albacore sashimi to the ending of a blue crab handroll, each piece of sushi is better than the next. I am so addicted I end up going almost weekly. Not cheap, but a great value as the quality is unmatched in the area. No menu, so this is not really sushi for beginners, but if you love sushi, you MUST try this place.
Overall great experience – I ate at Sasabune last night... I would have to agree with all of the reviews and give it one of my highest ratings for a sushi restaurant (the fish is of very high quality). I really enjoyed the experience here. You walk in, order a drink if you like, tell the waitress what you don't like and then you just sit, relax and enjoy. They started last night with albacore in a soy/wasabe plate and then the sushi came on small plates with two pieces each time; you consistently wait the same amount of time... read more
Best Sushi in New York – I cannot stand sushi and I absolutely love this place. It only took my friend who raved about the one in L.A. a month of convincing to get me to go and it was so worth the trip..granted I live across the street but if I lived anywhere else I would travel just to go here. I have never tasted fish so fresh in my entire life!! Just to give you an idea they close the restaurant if the fish market is closed. Having said that....call to make sure they are open. Thank you Sasabune for making me love sushi..... read more
Best Sushi I've Ever Had – With the most no frills sushi experience in NYC, what Sasabune lacks in decor it makes up for in fantastic sushi. Fresh, complex, rare, and expertly crafted and paced, this eating experience is out of this world. Easily the best sushi I've ever eaten in the whole country. You'll drop a significant percentage of your weekly paycheck, but it's totally worth it. You'll leave with a very happy stomach.
After a tidal wave of success in L.A. and Honolulu, a favorite for omakase sushi coasts into the Upper East Side. – The Scene Located on a quiet side street, the New York debut of this immensely popular sushi chain is a surprisingly low-key affair. The restaurant consists of two small rooms and a sushi bar, and eye candy is limited to a few bamboo stalks, an air conditioner and the sushi-fanatic crowd. Servers, though friendly, speak just enough English to take drink orders. The Food The fish on the daily-changing omakase (c... read more
best sushi! – I was blown away by the freshness of sushi at sasabune. Its what sushi should be like. Try it all its wonderful(i prefer it better than nobu or sushi samba's sushi - it just doesn't compare)
The only sushi. – This is by far the best sushi anywhere. Incredible omakase with the freshest fish possible. The flavors are perfect as are the chef made speciality sauces. Thank the food gods that Kenji moved to NYC.
