About this business

This Upper East Side sushi bar is not one of those places where pseudo or watered down versions of sushi make their way to your plate. You get to eat the real stuff here. The sign displayed at the entrance says "today's special, trust me". And you will more than trust the chef for the delectable fresh seafood. The Omakase menu changes daily but has some regular favorites. The decor is minimalist, almost non-existent except for some bamboo that serves as the only adornment. Sasabune is the place to be for authentic sushi.

Best Sushi EVER! – My BF's and I have been to the Honolulu and NYC restraurants and they are simply the best ever for sushi. We talk about our meals there all the time and in fact we are going there tonight to celebrate the one year anniversary of finding the restraurant in Honolulu. It is that good! Our next step is to complete the Susi Sasbune trifecta and go to the one in LA.

Awesome food, great experience – I found these reviews online and took a chance (I've only been in NYC for 7 months). My BF actually congratulated me on finding a "steal" (he's from here). We sat within seconds of arriving on a Friday night with reservations made at 4pm that day! We told the server what we didn't like and then we ate the freshest sushi I have ever had in my life! I eat sushi and often! Our service was fantastic! We especially appreciated the little tips on soy sauce/no soy sauce. Although I have to admit it ... read more

Best sushi in NYC by far – I have lived in NYC for over 30 years and have been to all the big name sushi restaurants: Masa, Kuruma Zushi, Blue Ribbon, Sushi Yasuda, Sushi of Gari, Bond Street, Sushi Sen-nin (just to name a small handful). Sasabune absolutely destroys all of them. The prices are totally fair for what you are getting, and the service is excellent. Good wine and sake list, and the servers are very helpful in making a selection. Seating is very limited though, so unless you're planning on going before 6:30pm or ... read more

Worth every penny – To call this a sushi place is almost an insult to the chefs there. Definitely not for noivce. The fish is very fresh of course. Rice is warm, which strangely, brings out the best taste of the flesh. It's not cheap. We spend $350 for 2 cause we order 2 bottles of sake & additional sashimi. The abalone is great. This place is definitely for sushi purists only.

Great sushi – I love how cute this place is. Also they are very sweet and inviting- you feel like part of the family, not just a customer. and the chef is an incredible stickler for freshness. I know that he chooses fish by hand every day at the seaport. This guy is no joke and will only serve the best. :)

Great sushi QPR – This place rocks, it's a great omakase joint that's not hideously expensive despite the quality of its ingredients. Sit at the bar and let the master take care of you. That said, two things stand out: they need to pack the rice tighter, several times on repeat visits the rice crumbled as I was bringing the roll to my mouth. Also, if you go for the early seating, you might feel rushed (I eat slowly, granted). That's the only 2 reasons I didn't give this place 5 stars.

Hands Down, best creative sushi in the City – I think you can only order the tasting menu, which is definitely what you want to do. Unlike other pretentious omakase menus in the city (i.e. Masa), this place has a laid-back, non-stuffy vibe. It's very small, so you will interact with the sushi chefs. And unlike a very traditional Japanese place (which has a time and a place), all of the courses come with creative sauces and dressings that really compliment the seafood. I had the most memorably fresh oysters in my life here. Y... read more

Wonderful sushi--top-notch, melt-in-your-mouth fish and seafood. – I have been there twice now, and I can't wait to go back again! The freshness and the quality of the seafood is among the best I have had in the city. Even though the plates are small, and most of them would take no more than a minute or two to consume, you will be quite full at the end of the meal. This is a great place to impress a date if he or she isn't afraid of eating raw seafood of all sorts. The decor is somewhat lacking, and the service isn't terribl... read more

go there! – the fish here is incredibly fresh. the omakase exceeds sushi of gari but is lighter on your wallet. just tell your server what you don't eat, and allow the chef to do the rest. the sashimi starter is sublime, as is the king crab roll finish. in between are several courses of sushi, paired to highlight eachother, and are served on warm rice (it brings out natural oils in the fish for maximum flavor). definitely my favorite sushi restaurant in the city, i try to come as often as i can. price ranges from $65-70 per ... read more
