There is little doubt that The Carlyle, with its magnificent view of Central Park and its close proximity to some of the best shops and museums in New York, is one of the preeminent "grand hotels" in New York. The Upper East Side landmark was built in 1930, when spacious accommodations, fine linens and furniture, and a large and attentive staff were the very least that might be expected for a true luxury hotel; and that tradition continues even today.

Take Me Back to Manhattan – The room, service and ambience truly speak of a bygone elegance and capture the spirit of Old New York. I went to see Eartha Kitt and was as impressed by the service as I was by her amazing performance. The food was basic, America fare - very well-prepared but nothing too exciting. And it was extremely expensive, but worth every penny. I would strongly recommend Cafe Carlyle as THE BEST special occasion restaurant in the city.
Great Woody Allen Show, lousy service – I booked a table weeks in advance for my mother and me to see Woody Allen's show in the Carlyle Cafe. Upon timely arrival they put us in the last corner of the room, next to the stage behind the drummer. It was not that there weren't any other tables free and we weren't dressed in jeans either. We were about to dine there for more than $500 including grat and cover! The food was ok but definitely not worth this money. The partial view table either. I did not want to spoil the party cau... read more
Cabaret great, prices not. – We went to go see Ute Lemper. During the first 15 minutes of the performance, the sound system gave horrible feedback. It was so bad, at one point she said, "Should I keep going? Paying $75 each just for the show, I expected the hotel to have a working and high end sound system. I naively thought dinner was served during the show, but the waiters don't come by once the shows start, so order your wine 30 mins before the show start time. The captain will expect a tip on your tab. Also, the Evian th... read more
Good taste and timeless class – My family visits the Carlyle each year and we always enjoy our stay. The suites are spacious and tastefully decorated. The service in exceptional, and the views of the park are a welcome perk. It is a convenient location for accessing the park and the shops along Madison and 5th avenues. There are some great restaurants in close proximity to the hotel as well. If you like the trendy scenes or wild nightlife then this is not the hotel for you, although it is a good place to spot the occassional... read more
The epitome of what good service should be – I took my wife to the Carlyle for her 35th birthday. The staff did an amazing job making us feel special. The food was wonderful, drinks in Bemelman's were wonderful, when you turn on the hurricane strength shower, you get hot water immediately, I could go on and on. The only bad thing about the Carlyle is that it has set the bar so high for other hotels, I don't know if I can travel again. Pricey, but it was worth every penny. We'll be back.
Many are called, few chosen – I have stayed at 4 star hotels all over this country and in Europe. I have been intermittently staying at the Carlyle since the 60's. The Carlyle is simply the best hotel that you can imagine. Go when Bobby Short is at Bemelman's. The service personnel are a little snooty since they will not know you, and the majority of the clientel are habitue's. If you are the type of person who is intimidated by service personnel, then perhaps this is not the hotel for you. Eat breakfast in the tearoom, but ... read more
MMMM... – Has the character, has Woody Allen every Monday...why would they care for more. The ambience is super! It was a pricey night but i can't even describe the retro magical feelings...a night to remember for sure. Cool and swing!
Great place, poor food – We went there to see Ute Lemper and she was fantastic. The venue is great. The people were nice and we had a great table. The food is bad and expensive. $15 for appetizer, $40 for main dish, no choice of tap water. You can either have sparkling or still for $10/bottle. My lamp was way too salty and my wife's porcini crusted chicken had not a hint of porcini. I would recommend going for the show and drinks, but not dinner.
Pure Class – A delightfully classy hotel. A throwback to when class meant something. And with Bobby Short as a regular at the Cafe Carlyle, nothing could be more perfect.
