Disappointing all around – May 14, 2003--The highly-touted "terrorized" NY steak was tough, overcooked, and loaded with fat and gristle. Not acceptable for a $29 dish, and a la carte at that. We would have told someone that if anyone bothered to come by to see if the food was okay. Since no one ever asked, we gave them our opinion anyway. As compensation, they offered free desserts--but only for those with the steaks, not the whole table (two of four people had the steak). The fried potatoes were only fair, the mixed grill av... read more
pricey but good – I had the strip steak and really regret it (very fatty). Has a tremendous menu (changes daily). Be weary if you don't like REAL and AUTHENTIC Northern Italian food! (rabbit, quail, etc.). Great Wine list. Nibbled on other plates...seafood was delicious. Loud and bustling restaurant (the way I like it).
Average – Good Italian wine list. Some waiters good; some average. Octopus salad a plus. The sardines were not very good. The steak was average; very fatty cut and not the finest steak on the market, despite its price. The pizzas are no where near NYC standards and are pretty much resembling bad cracker crust with weak sauce and froo froo California toppings.
Priciest spaghetti in town – I've tried to get a table here many times, and not easy if you just walk in without a reservation. So, I waited an hour for a table, didnt really bother me, since they had a bar. But the food here is way overrated. For the price you pay for the food here, I'm amazed at the quality of it. The ambience is good though.
On a rainy Saturday night... – ...our party of 9 was seated in the rear, where the noise was less along with the arm and leg room. (The reservation was not easy to come by.) Our waiter was friendly and knowledgable, as was the wine steward. Highlights were the polenta w/gorgonzola along with the salted sea bass -- I thought it was overpriced, but found it VERY succulent. It wouldn't be my first choice for a group that large, but I was a guest and thoroughly enjoyed the company I was with. It's a different kind of Italian...
Not worth it! – I made reservations a month before and they called to confirm. I asked a couple questions and they were SO rude. The manager I spoke to talked down to me is such an inappropriate way, I canceled. And this was for Valentines Day! Now it is too late to make reservations anywhere else. Believe me, I usually would not have given up Valentines Day reservations, but the treatment I got was not excusable. This place may have decent food, but it is not worth it!
Good Food, but Overpriced... – The menu was pretty diverse and the food was good, but I felt it was on the pricey side. A dinner for two with a bottle of wine can easily reach $100...I know of much better restaurants in the city that demand that price or lower for a comparable meal.
A Rose with no thorns – I went here with a group of people for the first time last night and I was for the most part not disappointed. The quality of the food was outstanding, the service excellent (though the front desk staff was slow in seating us) and the ambience very well thought out. We sat outdoors and watched the nightlife of North Beach unfold as we munched out pizzas, chicken, salads and more. Rosa Pistola is definitely a place that I will return to again.
Interesting Italian – The only thing that I remember was the butternut squash which was awesome. If you want to try atypical Italian dishes that aren't pasta related then go here. The waiter recommended us not to get the pasta, which seemed strange for an Italian place. The seafood was great. But overall nothing particularly struck me. Average quality for that price.
