RecommendedWhen our dog, Bagel got out and behind our fence into the semi wooded area, I knew he was going to come back a dirty dog, but I was not expecting him to look like the picture below. The store manager took my info as well as the pics and said she could help! Janee was our groomer today and she did a phenomenal job with our baby boy! He looks and feels amazing! Thank you so much for taking your time to deal with our “sticky” situation
We loved how they groomed our doodle but unfortunately the manager Levi was extremely rude and condescending when i called about how it should have been handled better. Will not be returning!
great place to take your pets! My dog loves to go! We tell him let's go to Petco where the pets go and he know what that is and gets super excited! I give Petco two thumbs up and recommend everyone to go there for all your pets needs! Great prices and always have stuff in stock! Helpful staff in the Ames Iowa store! Great pet grooming department as well!
According to the staff, the Iowa Department of Agriculture requires Petco to collect the personal information of anyone purchasing aquarium fish, but this does not appear to be true according to several independent shop owners I spoke with so apparently they either want to collect your information for marketing or to sell to other companies, either way, I won't be spending another dime there.

We got both our leopard geckos from Petco and always get their crickets. never had an issue. We also bring both our dogs in, Pitbulls- 2yrs at 75 lb and 18 wks at 30 lbs- and the staff are amazing. They love our boys and have never had a negative thing to say. Thor, our 2yr old, loves the employees and almost always gets a treat but always gets lovies. I live in Ames and I have been to the local Petco several times. I am generally pleased with their employees. On the other hand, their general manager Kim always makes me feel like I'm in the wrong for asking a question and that she is irritated with me.
They overcrowd their aquariums to the point that the employees can't even keep up with scooping out the deads. It's deplorable. The fish are sick, the tanks are dirty, the cats are SEVERLY neglected, the mice are killing each other, the store is unorganized, and the employees are all overworked trying to keep up. They don't give a single employee enough time to actually care for the animals, and in turn the animals suffer, and die rapidly. This isn't just the Ames Petco, this is ALL Petco's.
