Specialties Penelope is a café, bakery, and bar. It is also a worn out welcome mat, a sandwich between frisbee, an off season beer at the Montaukett, a winter nook in Woodstock, and a home away from home. The home-style food is prepared with the best ingredients and a little creativity by a loving kitchen- it is a refreshing take on mom's recipes and is delivered to you here just the same, always with a smile and an encouragement to relax. Packed Tables...Testifying to What? – Four members of Meetup's Thrifty Gourmets group joined me in field-testing this restaurant this past Tuesday. I don't understand why this eatery has been praised so highly. Its staff would not accept a reservation and the host would not seat us until our entire party had assembled. As a result, we waited almost half an hour for a small table in a cramped, but attractive, space. Penelope's policies related to reservations and seating may be intended to drive traffic to its bar. nice place – I tried to go there 3 times on sunday for a brunch, but it was crowed all the time. Finally I've been there for a breakfast on friday. We didn't have to wait. The breakfast was yummy, simple but innovative. Ths staff is really friendly, they asked if we needed sth quite often but it wasn't too much. I recommend this place. But if you wanna for for a brunch, better to go there before 11am! enjoy
Adorable and perfect in every way – The title of my post says it all. penelope is the kind of place you always seem to be looking for but can never find - cozy atmoshere, great friendly service, great comfort food, simple but delicious wine list, even better prices. I moved out of the neighborhood and still go back again and again.
cutest little restaurant! – Went to Penelope last Friday night with friend of mine. We didn't have to wait at all and the food was fabulous! The spinach artichoke dip was fantastic and the mac n cheese was the best I've ever had. It was the perfect meal after a wet, cold day in NYC.
Stop by if you like Diner quality brunch – After reading the wonderful reviews we decided to go over for brunch on a Sunday, we found the food to be woefully below par..... you are better off going to a diner. The Farmers Omlette was extremely plain and came without any toast while, the Nutella French Toast was downright poor...... the bread that was used was inappropriate for French Toast. There are far better places in NYC for brunch than this Penelope.
Great for an afternoon lunch – I found this place while walking to work one day - its very quaint with fresh, tasty, innovative and affordable meals. Where else can you get a lunch and drink in NYC served to you and pay $15, including tip (excluding the lobster roll, of course)? I've only tried a couple of the salads so far, but they have all been delicious and very flavorful. I plan on going back and working my way through the entire menu! I brought friends visiting from LA and they adored the place as well. If you can get ... read more
Completely overrated – I was really disappointed by this place. Judging from the terrific reviews here and the long lines outside, it seemed like a prime brunch spot. Unfortunately the food is no more than good diner quality, which is fine if you're actually at a diner, but is certainly not worth the wait or the price that you get here. Try someplace else.
Wow, Great Surprise!! – Sunday PM. This was just what we needed on this freezing cold night after walking to 2 other places with 1+ hour waits!! We remembered seeing Penelope's sidewalk sign on our last visit and decided to check it out, best decision this trip. Sooooo cute inside you wish it had a B & B attached. We ordered the Burgers even though most of the menu is on the vegee-organtic side. It was 2 inches thick, lean, cooked perfectly, juicy and tasted very fresh. They offer many cheese choices, we had the cheddar that... read more
Great atmosphere! Great brunch! – We recently spent a couple days in New York and picked Penelope's because of the great ratings on CitySearch. What a great decision that was!! Besides the chocolate french toast, pumpkin waffles and outstanding service I can't say enough great things about Penelope's. I highly recommend it.
Penelope has a 4.2 star rating with 1,849 reviews.
