Named for its Pearl District locale, Pearl Bakery was established in 1997. The friendly, young women behind the counter serve up some of the best cups of coffee in Portland. The pastries and sandwiches are exquisite, as are the now famous Parisian-style breads. For lunch, try the marinated eggplant sandwich on ciabatta bread. The brioche or croissant is standard fare for the breakfast crowd. Take a loaf of olive bread with you to snack on as you tour Powell's Books one block away.

Roasted eggplant sandwich was VERY good. Tasted like house made sun dried tomato spread. Totally worth the unbelievable price of $5

Still one of the BEST bakeries in Portland, even after 20 years and now dozens of strong competitors. There is simply no bundt cakes anywhere to rival Pearl Bakery's Almond Bundt Cake and Super Moist Carrot Cake. Their breads are wonderful too. Plus the space itself hearkens back to the Old Portland that is rapidly disappearing. You can find me there a couple of afternoons a week, musing a cappuccino and slowly, slowly eating one of those life-altering cakes. :-)
