Ask a Portlander where to go for dessert and the response is automatic: Papa Haydn. – In Short Compared to its sleek, bustling counterpart on Northwest 23rd Avenue, Papa Haydn East is quaint and relatively quiet. But the smaller, more discreet location doesn't deter people from driving across town for a slice of decadent triple-chocolate cake or velvety banana-cream pie. The menu features creative takes on contemporary and ethnic trends. Specials range from ravioli with black-pepper pasta to filet mignon with Italian spices ... read more

First Class or Coach? – "Are you here for dinner....or just desert?". Careful how you answer this. At Papa's you are a First Class (full meal) or Coach (desert) customer. I love the deserts and food at Papa Haydn, but last time we went for desert they kept trying to put us "coach" parties in this cramped 2-person table (look to the left of the desert display). After 2 parties refused to stay at this table before us, we got it. We ended up not staying at the table either. The host shot us dirty looks all night afterward. I do... read more

WEDDING CAKE ORDERING A DISASTER! – Initially, I had to call 3 days before someone would call me back. 3 weeks before my wedding I called back to finalize the design, and left messages for 5 days, no one returned calls. Contacted East side location and found the new "wedding cake" co-coordinator (the one I worked with left). I explained to him that I called for 5 days and no one returing my calls. His first response was "Are you mad at us?" I was perturbed, but maintained my cool. We finalized the design, and I asked him to ... read more

great dessert place – I've been to Papa Haydn several times for dessert with friends, and it has always been excellent. The German Chocolate Cake and the Panna Cotta are both terrific, as are the White Mint Chocolate Cake and the Black Velvet Cake. The prices are on the high side but the quality and large portions make it well worth it. An excellent choice for a dessert splurge when you're out on the town.

User review by erica1451 – The desserts here are amazing! You might want to share though because the portions are huge.

The Inevitable Decline – Most people have dinner at Papa Haydn in order to have dessert, but that only worked because their chefs had a talent for pulling off the faux-fancy meals without hitches. It's no minor feat to make pappardelle chicken tossed with morel mushrooms & fennel cream sauce hundreds of times without screwing it up. But those days are gone. Witness: shellfish macerated until little was left but the shell, chicken breast so dry that it threatened to dislocate my jaw (yes, that bad), a risotto that tasted of o... read more

Choose this one over 23rd location – No matter where you live, go to this location instead of the location on 23rd. The service is nice, very down to earth. The portions are the same but at least you don't have to deal with a bunch of snobby people.

GOOD Gourmet food – My husband and I visit this SE favorite once every 2-3 months, either for dessert after seeing a dinner/movie combo at a pub/theatre, or for dinner, drink, and dessert before going to the Moreland theatre. (Yes, our dates don't change a lot, but w/ 2 in diapers, we take what we can get.) The dessert is fantastic, and I have NEVER had a bad dinner here. My last dinner was roast beef, and it was cooked to perfection. The garlic mashed po were the perfect side, and both were amazingly flavorful. Perhaps some... read more
