Great Fish & Chips – The halibut was awesome and the fries were very good. However, the clam(?) chowder tasted more like ham chowder. It was definitely not worth the $6 for a small bowl. Our service was horrible. I got the chowder the same time as the halibut. The server had forgotten mine, but remember the other couples with us. I couldn't even get my glass of water until I was almost finished with my meal. I understand why this restaurant does so well for take-out orders. The food was EXCELLENT, but the service was HORRIBL... read more
The absolute best fish and chips and clam chowder! – Halibut's is actually two businesses side-by-side. The left side is a simple take out joint with the finest fish and chips I've ever had. They have many fish to choose from including salmon, sushi-grade ahi tuna, and jumbo prawns. The halibut is always moist, the batter always crisp - never greasy - and the prawns are incredibly good. Look out for the cocktail sauce, it is heavy on the horseradish and highly addictive. If that weren't enough, they also make awesome clam ch... read more
Simply the Best Fish & Chips – Within this casual, humble locale we have found quite easily the best fish & chips in town. This restaurant has focused on a simple and consistent dining formula resulting in a plate of fish and chips that couln't be more mouth-watering. Fresh fish, crispy and tasty batter, delicious fries. The atmosphere is fun and friendly. Great service no matter how crowded.
Best fried salmon in town – This place was more of a takeout joint before they opened the bar, now it's a legitimate fried food and get tanked hangout. They definitely draw in more customers now. I can't stress this enough though, you should eat here instead of takeout. The crab cakes here are pretty good but what really stands out is the salmon. They have fish specials sometimes which can be a bit mixed, but the salmon always stays true. If you're looking for fried fish this is the place to feed the onset of your next heart... read more
When you want fish and chips ... – For a city connected by navigable waterways to a relatively nearby ocean, Portland doesn't have too many good, cheap seafood places. And while Halibuts really doesn't qualify as cheap, the quality of fried seafood here makes the mildly fancy prices worth it. The fish was probably of good quality, but frankly, when I'm having fish and chips, it's all about the fry, and the batter here is perfectly crisp and just a bit sour. It was so tasty, I was ecstatic to find a few extra loose bits of fr... read more
Crispy deep fried fish has Northeast neighbors lining up for takeout. – In Short Located in the revamped Alberta Street neighborhood, this is a classic fish-and-chips joint that thrives on a brisk to-go business. The dining room features turquoise walls, nautical fish prints and classic soul music. The menu includes battered Alaskan halibut, catfish, shrimp and cod with crisp fries. Clam chowder and limited sides like coleslaw are also available.
Gotta try it! – By chance we happened upon this great place. The food is outstanding, service excellent, and the owner is a kick -- loves to tell you how good it all is, and he's right!. The fish & chips were the best I've had in Portland (speaking as a Portland native) -- flavorful and moist, breading not overbearding . We also liked the cole slaw, even though some media reviewer didn't. The corn was also very, very good, and the kids chicken strips tasted like chicken instead of the usual mystery meat. The price is a littl... read more
"Hook" me up! – Fishing for a new place to eat we happened upon a gem of a hole in the wall. Halibuts compact menu breathes new life into what many restraunts claim to be experts in; fish and chips. The fish was tender and cooked to perfection. The light and flavorful batter hugged the fish like a light summer blanket; not at all overpowering or hiding the flavor of the juicy fresh seafood. The prawns...GOTTA get some. If the owner suggests a special don't pass, he knows his stuff. For all the rest of you fish flingers take ... read more
