Adding fruit to baked goods is an inspired idea. Fruit and vegetable ingredients keep dough moist while adding unique flavor and texture. Consider these fruity classics: pineapple upside down cake, banana nut bread, and blueberry muffins. Yum.

Dov Behr Manischewitz started a small matzoh bakery in 1887, which eventually become the B. Manischewitz Baking Company that introduced commercial matzas. He was able to manufacture his matzas because of the invention of a machine that produced 50,000 pounds of matzoh a day.

Did you know that the original muffins were actually a yeast bread and originated in England? However, American muffins have evolved to be more of a cross between a bread and cake, with a leavener used instead of yeast.

Quality and quantity meet at the top at this bakery. The price is right and the products are amazing. My favorite are those almond pretzels - they are to die for! and the chocolate iced cake donuts are the best I've ever had. The whole cakes are a bit pricey... I think I spent $20 on a German Chocolate cake that was good, but the German Chocolate coffee cake was even better and only $7. The place is almost always busy. Bring change for the meters if you are driving to it!

Great Coffee Cakes The Oak Park Bakery is a great place to go for Coffee Cakes (their specialty). Make sure to get there before 10:00 for a good selection. Also, bring the kids, they usually give them a free cookie.
