the bakery is fine, but the restaurant is wildly over-priced for diner food. for the same cost, you could go to a nice restaurant...or get your diner food at dennys for a quarter of the prices charged here. its a shame that supporting an oakland institution is such a rip-off.
yes, certainly the bakery is a classic, but the restaurant leaves much to be desired. Terribly overpriced for the quality--canned veggies are de rigur. And the service is slow, surly, indifferent, typical of family-style coffee shops everywhere, so this is not too surprising. I guess I just expect more considering the dear prices they charge for such mediocre food. Only saving grace is late night opening hours, when there isnt much else to choose from.
Good Tuna Melts, french toast and fried chicken.......Desserts are great, but expensive.
Okay dont come here trying to eat all healthy or lose weight. Come here because you want to enjoy delicious, old-fashioned diner food in a unpretentious, cozy, old-school restaurant/bakery. And afterwards, if its sunny, take a 3 mile walk around Lake Merritt. Its a great place to eat before seeing movies at the Parkway Speakeasy Theater, which is close by. This is the kind of place your grandparents would love. And you will, too, once you visit.
Im pregnant now and omg! Ive craved nothing more than a strawberry shortcake (or strawberry tall cake as i like to call it... so many layers!!!) from there. The regular food is good too. The cakes are slightly pricey but worth every bite. My baby shower cake is costing us 80 bucks for a half sheet of the strawberry tall cake but omg it is soooooooooooooo worth it! any pastry you want - they have it! they will even make a cake to look like a hamburger for you! the pastries are perfect, and so are all the savory non-pastry items! they have the classics you love like home made mac n cheese plus theyre open late! 1am weekdays, 2am weekends
There bakery dept. omg!! words cant say, there so GOOD! especially there Black Forest Cake and Strawberry Short Cake, If you want a GOOD GOOD Cake,Cupcakes,Danishes, then Merritt Bakery is the place, Ive never eaten in the Restaurant part, but I know people that has and theres wasnt any complaints. But if its like the Bakery part then I know its GOOD.
