About this business

Oaxacan cuisine is served at La Carta de Oaxaca, which is nestled on Ballard Avenue. You can't miss the bright entrance. Once you step in, make yourself comfortable at one of the long tables. Do let your glance venture towards the open kitchen where a busy staff cooks up delicious Mexican treats. Lots of black and white photographs line the otherwise plain walls. House specialties include the famous Oaxacan mole negro and fish soup among many others. In case you get stuck waiting for a table, go ahead and gulp down those teq... read more

Muy sabroso – I went with a group of friends and we were all fell in love with Oaxaca. The service was great but the food was beyond description. Before the food arrived, we were all happily chatting. After, it was a series of, "Ooooh, try this." This mole is the best I have tasted." We ate family style so we got to sample many wonderful dishes. We will all be back soon.

What a spot! – We're fortunate that La Carta de Oaxaca is so close to home - we walk down at least once a week to see our friends Ophelia (master tortilla maker), Roberto (server with the most!), and the rest of the crew. The authentic food is a taste delight and the prices more than fair. The Hornitos margarita makes a perfect compliment to your meal. If you don't mind sodium, try the entomatadas (skirt steak) - so tasty. This place is a blast. Give it a shot but don't go telling everyone!

really? – i had been looking forward to an amazing dinner, but this place is nothing too special. the service was friendly and prompt, and everything was fresh, but not incredible like other reviews would suggest. perhaps its because i am used to the stellar mexican in los angeles, but i would call this place just a little bit above average. the sangria was average, the guac above average, and the mole was very good.

Finally, decent Mexican in Seattle – This place is amazing. The food is incredibly authentic, and delicious. The sangria is great, and made when you order it, and even the simplest dishes are excellent. The best way to eat here is to bring friends and split several dishes. The prices are quite reasonable. The only downside is that everyone knows La Carta is great, and it's pretty small, so you have to plan to wait on weekends (especially with groups of more than four). Be aware that a few tables are for European-style seatin... read more

Skip the drinks – Everyone talks about how great the drinks are here. They are great...if you're talking about a way to spend a lot of money on little alcohol. Not withstanding, the food was excellent and very reasonably priced. The atmosphere is unique and it's in Ballard, so you can't go wrong.

hope your thirsty – A bit too trendy for my own taste. The menu items are inexpensive, but you end up buying 2 or 3 dishes just to fill slightly satisfied. The margaritas on the other hand were excellent, and they had a great selection of Mexican beers.

Mexican food as it should be – The food is incredible & a good selection of Mexican beers to wash it down. The starter bowl of chips comes to the table HOT & the salsa bar has a big variety so I could dine on chips, salsa, guacamole and beer alone. Seating is limited, 3 or 4 separate groups of diners often have to share the same big table. The food is excellent (except for the empanada with yellow curry sauce which sounds more interesting than it tastes). There are no pools of greasy refried beans, melted cheddar cheese or i... read more

WONDERFUL!!!! – This place is the most authentic Mexican food I have EVER tasted. The food was wonderful (and smelled wonderful), not the same kind of Mexican food you find at big chains. The entrees are small and do not include rice and bean...everything is al a carte, so you can mix and match. The 12 of us ended up sharing almost everything...there was a lot of "you've got to try this". The atmosphere was very festive. The walls are covered with family photos of Oaxaca, but it maintains a modern feel. Above all it was lots... read more
