Close, but no cigar – Food was decent...I thought the Bruchetta was a little over priced, and too oily. The proscuitto was nice and firm...not too fatty. My Pasta was too salty and it seemed like the meat was Bacon Bits. Service was poor, I don't think our monotone server smiled once. I might go back in a few months and try the bar.
cheap, tasty mainstay – La Buca is fantastic. It's small and cozy, so you feel like you've found a secret neighborhood spot. But it's also got subtle, airy decor so it feels open and hip. I love to take people from out of town here because it showcases Portland's casual hipness. Both large family and tiny hipster groups will eat happy, but it can be a bit of a wait for more than 6 people. The great news is that there are bleeding edge restaurants on the same block, keeping the snooty crowds away. Vegan friendly; their brusch... read more
Good creative Italian – The menu here is creative and is very reasonably priced. The pasta special I had was flavorful and large portioned. My hubby had the meatball sandwich and it was very tasty (actually spicy...most places say it's spicy when it's not really) and cheap! The service was a tad slow, not terrible, but could have been better. I would definitely go back!
Good prices & portions – The Italian sausage penne bathed in a pinkish tomato sauce was good. The bruchetta prochuito appetizer was not a good value as you get four small pieces for $5. I'd pass on the mashed potatoes with pesto and olive oil.
The best panini in Portland – La Buca has the best Panini in town. My favorite is buffone with rosemary roasted ham and arugula pesto. The soup of the day has always been a pleasant surprise. The last time I was there, they had clam chowder and although it was runny the taste was the best I have ever had. The clams tasted so fresh, like they just shelled it in the kitchen before bringing it to the table. And all this for $6.50. How can you bit that!
Great Date! – La Buca is my favorite date restaurant. The food is excellent and not too expensive (a must if you're picking the restaurant and they're picking up the tab, I think), the bar is cozy, the candles flickery, you're able to talk and have a glass of wine and get to know one another. The spinach salad, with lemon oil, is incredible, the bread is fresh and soft, the butter isn't frozen, and the staff very accomodating. Great choice!!
Gnocchi, soft and pliant – I had the pesto gnocchi. These potato dumplings were fresh light pillows of dumpling glory. The pesto sauce was also flavorful, with herbs and pinenuts, and the dish comes with a lemon wedge in case you need some zing. My only problem with the dish is that for me, the portion was so large that it became a little monotonous towards the end. I solved this by stealing some of my partners italian sausage in tomato sauce and eating it with the gnocchi. Very tasty.
