11 hours in the ER. And while I understand the long wait times are to be expected, there has got to be a better means of care while we wait. I mean it's the dead of winter and we weren't even asked if we needed a blanket. We're just packed into the hallway after basic vitals and the only interaction was temperature and blood pressure every few hours. We were barely acknowledged until we got a room. I've had positive, even life-saving experiences at Holy Spirit, but the ER is a different story. It's understandable that a patient may need to wait for hours in a windowless room before meeting the doctor in charge. Less understandable is the nursing staff's playing games, eating, and disregarding not only the patients but also the patient-attending "sitters" who must themselves struggle to flag down a staff member so that they can occasionally use the toilet. Overall experience wasn’t pleasant. Went to the emergency room two days in a row for a severe sore throat, tonsils all swollen. Pain level was 9/10 for me. Nothing was done. Was told to drink liquids and take Tylenol. Which was impossible due to the fact that swallowing felt like knifes stabbing my throat. The people in that er are just very careless and it shows. We have all heard stories about waiting for hours in the ER. So I was surprised at how very quickly I was taken back without sitting in the waiting room for 2 minutes. Everything moved quickly. My concern was thoroughly evaluated with urinalysis, blood work, CT scan and physician examination. And, within 3 hours, I was back home again. I really appreciated not having to spend an entire day in the ER. The only thing that I found missing was friendliness.
