History The Jaarsma Bakery in Pella, Iowa has been offering delicious "Dutch Treats" since 1889, when it was founded by Harmon Jaarsma who used recipes he brought over as an immigrant from Holland. A hundred years ago, Harmon had two brick ovens in the bakery that were fired with wood. After the ashes were brushed out, the bread was put in to bake, followed by the buns, Dutch Letters, cookies, and finally rusks as the ovens slowly cooled down before re-firing. For the first time I am disappointed in this bakery. I have been going here since I was a kid. Spent every week there when I lived in town. I don't get to Pella as much as I would like and when my coworkers drive through town they know I love the cookies so they stop. I have a loyalty card and for the first time today I was not able to use it because I placed my order over the phone which I have been doing for the last three years. Just extremely disappointed and will no longer be placing over the phone orders.
Recently got to visit from Chattanooga, Tennessee and I fell in love. With the delicious food, the charming atmosphere and the helpful employees. Thank you for making my trip that much more memorable.
These Oklahoma Hawkeyes would never miss a chance to go to Jaarsma when we are in Iowa! The tradition of loading up apple bread and Dutch letters to take home lives on.
I don't do drugs, but I do Jaarsma. I buy several chocolate iced cream-filled Bismarcks and several other things each visit and it's all good. We make a trip through Pella once or twice every summer and this is always our first stop.
Always fresh and sweet. The employees happy and helpful. Nice experience. Worth stopping into stock up!
Amazing bakery with so many delicious things it was hard to choose which to have! In a lovely town too.
Our most favorite bakery in the US. Always stop by when on I80. Everyone is my friend when I have boxes of letters.
