Not Terrible, but Disappointing – Went for brunch, and it seemed like the staff was unsurpervised. No bread on the table, but bread plates were there. Coffee tasted like it had sat on the warmer for a hour. Food was indifferently prepared, some good, some seemingly unseasoned or undercooked. Waiter seemed like he was a kitchen extra who was replacing a sick-out; barely spoke to us. Again, not the worst that I've ever had, but it didn't seem like anyone there cared about the customer at all.
Terribly slow service, mediocre food – We booked a table for 13 for a birthday party. It took them almost half an hour just to bring our drinks. We sat right across from where the wait staff picked up the food to serve to the patrons and watched as the food sat, and sat, and sat until somehow had the time to serve it. I guess that was foreshadowing in some sense because we got seated at 8pm (actually 8:15 because they were running late and almost ruined our surprise party) and didnt get our food til 9:30pm. It's an okay restaurant – I went on an arranged group dinner and while the service was prompt and very friendly, the food is just about average for San Francisco standards. I can think of other places in the city where you can get a dinner for less than the prices here and much more imaginative and higher quality. I guess that's what you get with a chain restaraunt though.
Absolute worst food ! – I went to Il Fornaio with 3 friends last week and it was without a doubt the worst food I've eaten in a restaurant in 10 years. 3 out of 4 of our plates were ice cold on arrival. The pasta tasted like garbage. The chicken plate was tasteless. The service was awful. The bread was stale. When we requested our plates to be warmed up they took 10 minutes to return them and they acted like it was some sort of unusual request. What a terrible restaurant ! not as good as other Il Fornaios – I've been to Il Fornaio restaurants in 4 states, and have been impressed with all of them except for this one. Food preparation is consistantly lackluster and given the other dining choices in this city, I'd choose somewhere else. A shame, because when I lived in Portland, Il Fornaio was one of my favorite places for lunch or a casual dinner.
Happy Birthday – I went there last Friday with 2 other friends for one of their birthday day's and we had fun! The food was very good, the drinks were not too strong or too light, and the service for excellent. We were seated right away and they had valet parking. The price of the food reasonable, except that I had a different menu than my friends, but other than that everything was fine.

Sloppy Preparation - Terrible Wait staff – Went with a big group. The waiter couldn't get the order right, but refused to write anything down. He had to ask over and over again what everyone ordered. The waiter then became abusive when people started to grow weary from three inquiries about what everyone ordered. The food was so so. Decent place – This place is decent. Food was good but a bit overpriced. Ambience is great, and service went smoothly.
