The Hotel Rex in Union Square was inspired by the San Francisco art and literary salons of the 1920's and 30's. Vibrant and alive, the boutique hotel lobby surrounds guests with distinctive period furnishings, walls of antiquarian books, and an exceptional collection of exotic objects, original portraits and murals.

Good value Very good location. We had a slightly bigger rom with 1 queen bed and I Q pull out sofa. Friendly staff. Restaurant was also ok..though slighlty on the expensive side.
Good, kind, genuine service – This is a great boutique hotel. Perfect location on Sutter St. near Union Square. The lobby is warm and inviting as are the staff. Great value vs. price.
A literary bent to a stylish hostelry. – The Scene Modeled after New York's famous Algonquin circa the 1930s, this salon-style hotel (formerly the Orchard) showcases well-known Bay Area authors, such as Jack London and Ambrose Bierce. In the extensive lobby library, their works line the mahogany bookshelves, and their portraits brighten the beige walls. In keeping with the bookish theme, poetry readings are held once a month in the lobby. The Details The hotel was opened by the Joie de Vivre group in 1997. It sits near Union... read more
Wonderful hotel, fabulous customer service -- Stay here when you're in San Francisco. – My husband and I came for our anniversary, and we loved it. This is no chain hotel--this place is chock full of personality. The hotel has charming decor, a beautiful lobby and bar, and one of the best restaurants in the city (it's tiny and seats roughly 24 people). Everyone here is friendly and helpful. There's a complementary glass of wonderful wine offered every evening. Steinbeck and Hammett quotes painted on the walls (if you love bo... read more
Wonderful Hotel! – My family and I stayed at the Hotel Rex and was impressed with the overall feel and character of the place. We loved how it felt very New York and San Francisco altogether. The location was perfect. It is a small hotel but big on character and charm. The food at the restaurant by the lobby, Cafe Andree was superb! This hotel will now be our special hideaway place in SF!
A good deal My wife calls this a boutique hotel. The rooms are fair sized, as are the bathrooms (which come with lots of amenities to please the missus.) All is decorated for color and function and comfort. It's quiet here, and that's important to me, especially in what I consider an older property. Service is great, as is the location. A good but not great value.
Great Hotel on Union Square – Very nice hotel on Union Square. It's far from the homeless areas like Geary or Taylor. Great service and very nice amenities in the room.
Boutique Hotel - Perfect Hideaway – Great boutique hotel on Sutter Street, a block away from Union Square. The hotel has a great lobby with bar in the end. The place offers free wine every evening, high-speed Internet in each room, and awesome service! They also have a nice private business center free for guests.
Beware... – I was in the hotel for wedding preparations, and gave some mail to the desk clerk as they said they had a mail box. My mail never reached it's destination, including the two rented DVD's that I was returning. It's a shame when a lovely place has a dishonest staff. It also took the valet almost an hour to fetch our car at 11:00 at night.
Hotel Rex has a 4.5 star rating with 512 reviews.
Hotel Rex is closed now. It will open at 9:00 a.m.
