Cataracts are cloudy areas in the lens of the eyes that affect how your eyes process light. The lens of your eye works similar to that of a camera, allowing light to pass through. Cataracts, which form slowly over time, can disrupt this process, impacting eyesight.
Invest in polarized sunglasses. Dark lenses just stimulate your pupils to dilate which allows more exposure to UV rays. Decent sunglasses in your youth can save your eyes in later years.
Although wearing safety goggles or sunglasses whenever necessary are obvious ways to protect your vision, what you eat also matters. Eating a diet rich in leafy greens and other vegetables can provide your eyes with the nutrients they need to stay healthy.
Did you know that a vitamin or mineral deficiency can actually end up impairing retinal function? Researchers have found that those with a diet high in vitamins C and E, zinc, lutein, zeaxanthin, and omega-3 fatty acids are less likely to develop eye disease.
Did you know that by age 65 over 30% of American adults will suffer from some form of eye disease? Age related Macular degeneration, or AMD, is the leading cause of partial vision loss, affecting over 10 million people.
While pirates once wore earrings for a number of reasons – including as a symbol of adventure or to ward off bad luck – some pirates and sailors also wore earrings because it was believed that earrings could improve or cure bad eyesight.
"Floaters" are tiny spots or specks that seem to float across your field of vision whenever you rub your eyes. Floaters are also seen in well-lit rooms or outside when it is bright out. Seeing floaters occasionally is normal, but if you see them with greater frequency, it’s important to see an ophthalmologist, as you may be experiencing retinal detachment.
While many cataract patients opt for a standard lens implant that will only help them get rid of their glasses for distance vision, this isn’t your only option. Let’s talk about whether multi-focal lens options are appropriate for you.
While the term “detached retina” sounds painful, it isn’t. If you have a family history of the condition, watch for these signs: flashes of light; seeing small flecks or threads (also called “floaters”); darkening of your peripheral vision. If you have any of these symptoms, call the ophthalmologist immediately.
