Fort Chadbourne is a frontier military fort established in 1852. It was officially abandoned in 1867 when they ran out of water and supplies. Samuel and Mary Maverick owned the fort site and leased it to the military. Garland Richard's family purchased the fort site from the Mavericks in 1877 and they have been here for 8 generations. A nonprofit organization was formed to protect, preserve and present the historic site of Fort Chadbourne to the public.
