Fort Chadbourne is a frontier military fort established in 1852. It was officially abandoned in 1867 when they ran out of water and supplies. Samuel and Mary Maverick owned the fort site and leased it to the military. Garland Richard's family purchased the fort site from the Mavericks in 1877 and they have been here for 8 generations. A hidden treasure!! We loved the museum and grounds.
Fort Chadbourne in Bronte, TX is a great historical site. Their museum is filled with tons of artifacts , cannons, and many other exhibits. My favorite was the stagecoach! It is definitely worth the trip!
Fort Chadbourne is a wonderful historical insight to Texas and the tenacious families that built a legacy for future generations. Garland and Lana Richards have dedicated their lives to unfolding a past of struggles and victories of their ancestors to unveil the strength in holding true to the land which born them. Truly a wonderful place to visit!!
An absolutely astounding collection of old west weapons and paraphernalia greet you at the stunningly beautiful visitor's center, and as you exit the modern building and step out among the ruins of Fort Chadbourne you can almost hear the cadence, the marching, and the voices of the men and women that made up the community of this beautiful Texas Fort. The incredibly detailed restored buildings take you even further into the past and the legacy that is Fort Chadbourne.
The visitors center was awesome, but not being able to walk around the buildings that made up the fort without a guide was silly. Also prices at the gift shop are ridiculous, $8 for an approximately 3" oval patch & $5 for a quarter size hat pin. In all honesty I wouldn't recommend going.
Business response:
David, we are sorry you thought our prices were too high. In 5 years, your are our first negative review. We don't have the luxury of buyng in larger quantities that larger businesses have. Our gift shop helps pay to keep our doors open along with the donations we receive. As for the buildings, you are able to walk the site without a guide but the buildings are locked for security reasons. . As a nonprofit organization, we do have expenses to pay. I am sorry your visit was not a good one.
