Fort Chadbourne is a frontier military fort established in 1852. It was officially abandoned in 1867 when they ran out of water and supplies. Samuel and Mary Maverick owned the fort site and leased it to the military. Garland Richard's family purchased the fort site from the Mavericks in 1877 and they have been here for 8 generations. A nonprofit organization was formed to protect, preserve and present the historic site of Fort Chadbourne to the public. Thanks for your really nice review! Do visit again!
This piece of history could have been bulldozed and sold for high dollar ranch land, but Garland preserved a great part of our History. What a day spent at this Monument. You are immediately met by the Garland and his wife and it was like you reinitiated and old conversation. Our tour guide, Brent Bryan, was like spending the day with and old friend. Exchange of stories and jokes. I will go back. I recommend that you take a day, PACK A LUNCH, and visit the beautiful place of history.
Its well worth a visited, the staff make you feel welcome. I been to a few West Texas Forts, and Fort Chadbourne is right at the top of being the best.

History is alive!!! This place is growing and showing! From their extensive gun and artifact collection to the rebuilt quarters of officers and enlisted personnel from the 1800s, you can see the passion that is put into preserving history! Never forget the past, it's the only thing that reminds us of how we got to where we are now!
If you like history, this is the place to go. The Fort Chadbourne organization has hosted two camp outs for my youth organization. Each time the kids have had a great experience learning about the Fort’s history. This is one of those places that you need to go to multiple times just to be able to process all of the historical data and artifacts. Every time I go I learn something new. I especially like how the staff is patient and willing to work with children young and old.
