Fort Chadbourne is a frontier military fort established in 1852. It was officially abandoned in 1867 when they ran out of water and supplies. Samuel and Mary Maverick owned the fort site and leased it to the military. Garland Richard's family purchased the fort site from the Mavericks in 1877 and they have been here for 8 generations. Just watched Strange Inheritance/Fox and this landmark looks incredibly impressive. Great there are those who have preserved this historic place.
What a great museum! I loved the attention to detail. Great collections of artifacts and history of a once forgotten fort. Thank you for the personal tour. We really benefited by getting there early.
Texas & American history is alive & well at Fort Chadbourne TX on the Chadbourne Ranch 12 north of Bronte! Well done, super friendly folks & all done with private funds! Much better than Strange Inheritance show! A real jewel in the West!

Fort Chadbourne is a true gem! My wife and I really enjoyed our visit yesterday afternoon, especially viewing the documentary film which is superbly done. The folks with the Fort Chadbourne Foundation are some of the friendliest you will meet!
My wife and I had a great visit to Fort Chadbourne! If you have an interest in Military History, Texas History or the story of the American West then you need to visit Fort Chadbourne. The documentary film is a MUST SEE, superbly done. Looking foward to our next visit.

Brent was our tour guide. He is knowledgeable and answered our questions with patience and made it very enjoyable.
We saw about this Fort on Red Stegall's , West of Wall Street show. While watching the show they were filming inside of one of the buildings were cowboys that had worked the ranch had carved their names on the walls. One of the names was William A Avery, which is Larry's great grandfathers name. Don't know if it was him or not, but we wanted to go see the carving for ourselves. What a remarkable collection of guns and artifacts and wonderfully restored buildings. All should take time to go explore this treasure.

Thank you!
Having photographed most of the forts on the Texas Fort Trail and many other historical military sites throughout the country, I was very excited to finally get to visit Fort Chadbourne. I had heard great things about it. My maternal ancestors were born and died in this region. My parents were actually buried in Blackwell Cemetery on the day before our visit. I really wish that I could give this place a 5-star rating; however, unfortunately it does not deserve such lofty acco...Continue Reading
