LOVE YOU!!!! – My husband and I eat at this "treat" of a diner at least three times a week. The food is excellent and the host is more than any customer could ask for!!! At times the waitstaff is over-worked...but always pleasant and accomodating. We have always enjoyed our meals (and we've had almost everything) and when-ever they were running a little behind - the waitstaff informed us promptly. When a place is as-busy-as Eleven...we, as customers must be willing to be patient (up to a point)...because in the end - THE FOO... read more
South Loop Jewish diner and deli bustles with a diverse crowd for its affordable comfort food and generous desserts. – The Scene A revolving door constantly in flux hustles couples and singles into this bi-level diner in the South Loop. Retro touches stand out everywhere: a deli case up front, gleaming tile floors, roomy booths, a wall-sized chalkboard offering the day's specials and various desserts displayed in glass dome platters. The owner and his mother prowl the scene to say hello and provide backup support to servers.... read more
You'll never leave hungry or unamused from this standout south loop deli/diner – From the hustling busboys to the boisterous, yet charismatic, owner, Brad Rubin, Eleven City Diner offers good food, spirits and times. I, personally, love the Reuben sandwich which most purists will scoff at because it is served open-face. Good! More for me! Also, be sure to get a matzoh ball soup, Mexican scramble, cans of Schlitz (for the late night) and if you are really hungry, perhaps you can tackle the Tom Waits breakfast platter. From th... read more
Terrible – The experience was like trying to have brunch with someone standing next to your table, banging on a large metal pan with a wooden spoon, while being condescended to by every passing waitstaff. Being recent transplants to Chicago from New York, we were excited to have something like this in our neighborhood. The space was nice, but the hostess and most of the wait staff were rude, dismissive, and generally indifferent to the idea of even basic service. First off, with a half-full restaurant, the hostess insisted t... read more
Looks good but very deciving – It was 4 of us, to celebrate my bday with breakfast. The hosts were fabulous, the owner is a little extra, he is not very pleasant and always running around like there is an emergency. The waitress was TERRIBLE, she was not pleasant, and then she just ignored us. The food is very basic. . The portions are pretty large, so my friend and I decided to share some pancakes (3 per plate) and chicken sausage(3 very good). The charged a $2.95 sharing charge! Which is at their discretion, the waitress t... read more
Great pastrami – The food was really good. I had the best pastrami sandwich I have ever had and the bowl of roasted green pepper soup was perfect. I was willing to sit at the counter so I got seated right away. The service was a bit slow but not too bad. All the wait staff seemed a little frazzled but they were still very nice. The only down side is that it is rather noisy.
Better Places For Jewish Food – Don't bother with Eleven if you want a good Jewish deli...though the host is of the most...if you can't make it there during "lunch hours" you won't get your Matzo ball soup or corned beef sandwich until 12:30pm. We were resolved to runny eggs for breakfast...food came out cold and they are desparately understaffed. Waiter stated the owner in a "control freak" and has a hard time keeping employees. So if you were hoping for a NY deli experience on the weekend with a typical "jewish deli" pleth... read more
It all went wrong! – I ordered take-out here last Saturday afternoon. I waited 15 minutes for a corned beef sandwich. At that point, I overheard the maitre d' tell the servers that they had run out of corned beef and to inform the customers. So, I did not get my corned beef and ate a weak and over-priced substitute instead. The ambiance was frenetic and unappealing. The service was terrible and the music loud and disjointed for the setting. In truth, there are much better choices for corned beef and dining in our wonderful C... read more
Great ambience & good food – My wife and I had lunch at the Eleven City Diner in May 2006, and we both thoroughly enjoyed our meal. I would highly recommend the Lox & Bagel sandwich with nova. Also, the French toast looked terrific and the apple pie should not be missed. However, the pie was a little steep at $5/slice. They serve Homer's ice cream which is quite creamy and a great vanilla taste. It was not the best dining experience I have had, but we will return.
