rude beyond words – Will never go back here. Left without even having one drink or a bite of food as the entire male waitstaff engaged in a yelling match with us. This because we pulled on the locked door handle while the guy was unlocking it -- after 4pm, when their business is supposed to be open! The guy's first words to us as he cracked open the door were not to mess with the door and that if we didn't like it, to leave, and then he still made nasty comments after WE IMMEDIATELY APOLOGIZED and were inside. They told us t... read more
Muy Bueno! – El Chavo is a ritual stop everytime I'm in LA. Great house margaritas, spicy salsa, a decent plate of food and a really funky decor - the place is a lot of fun! Also, featured live traditional music is a plus and creates a moody-dark Cantina feel. I really enjoy the ambiance because it makes the experience complete.
some of the best Mexican Food in LA – seriously, I've done a lot of Mexican restaurants, but only this one comes close to my mom's cooking. I've only recently discovered this place and while I haven't really liked the margaritas, the food has ALWAYS been a good surprise. the tamales and chiles rellenos are made the way they're supposed to be, not an Americanized adaptation. the decor is a bit cheesy, but who cares when the food is this good.
No plastic and rude hostess – The food is good and the atmosphere is funky but non-acceptance of credit cards is a pain and my experience with the management was negative. I used to be a semi-regular and was there with a guest one Saturday night. People were waiting for tables so right after we finished, the hostess came up and asked, "Would you like to have an after-dinner drink in the bar?" I thought that was a gracious and generous way to ask us to free up the table. Wrong! She moved us to the bar, took our order for two ... read more
The best mex you can find – im not very old, but i'e been comming here since my grandmother put me in a stroller so like 16 years, and the food is the best mexican food you can find north of the border. their enchiladas w/ shrimp are delicious, as well as their buttery corn tamales that i challenge anyone to find a place that makes them better. And for dessert, their flan wow thats a meal all to itself right there.
Worst margarita; angry waiter – Food's okay, but lard-heavy. I was served the worst margarita in my life; had to be with bottom-of-the-mix-barrel sludge. Waiter wouldn't taste it, return it, or take it off bill or replace it. Got VERY angry and tyold us he had been there decades knew what he was talking about. Not if he had done even the basics of customer service and tasted it. Horrific experience.
Fabulous gay couples, frosty margaritas and more fluorescent sombreros than you can shake a maraca at. – The Scene The fact that "El Chavo" roughly translates into "the guy" from Mexican slang fits nicely with the hot and happening gay dinner-date scene here. While being serenaded with live guitar music you can wait for a table or just enjoy the scenery at the long dark bar, which has quite possibly the best use of black lights anywhere in L.A. They aim up instead of down, illuminating the array of orange, green and blue som... read more
THE best in the west – Have eaten at El Chavo for 23+ years. Whenever any of our family come to town this is where they must go - from: Wash D.C. - Atlanta GA - Raleigh N.C. - Charleston, S.C, etc,etc Margaritas are the best and not to find anywhere else the Rinones and Lengua con Mole are wonderful! Each meal has a different soup as part of the meal and the specials are always interesting. No hum drum meat-and-potatoes- Mexican haunt here, reviewer has a distorted sense of taste!
El Great – the salsa is the best. (hot, but great) the food, drink, decor are all great. they only take cash...which is tough. but well worth it.
