Love this place! – Have been a big fan of this place for years. What's not to like - great authentic food and amazing margaritas (rocks, no salt please). Staff have always been pleasant, eager to please and well, entertaining as well. The restaurant itself is dark and kinda kitchy - blacklights, upside down sombrero's and yes, pictures of Dolly Parton behind the bar. Definate good time!
Great Food, Great Service... – I am not sure if this place has changed since the previous posters wrote. We have lived in Los Feliz for 2 yrs now and go to El Chavo often. The margaritas are great...Food has always been great...And we have never been rushed when eating. We often enjoy a drink or two after dinner and never feel rushed to leave. The waitstaff is very friendly and always remember what you like to drink...Ignore the previous posts...Check out El Chavo...I don't think you will be disappointed.
Average Mexican Food. – Food is just average. The table and chairs are uncomfortable and close together in a rectangular room. I remember this place years ago as fun after I'd been out drinking. Don't do that anymore. So if that is what you are doing this place is OK. Our waiter was in a rush every time he either came to the table or I called him.
Dine & Dash – We have been going to this place for OVER 20 years and the wait staff know us and bring us our drinks as we sit down. They love us because we are generous tippers. However, we shall not return. We have been rushed out of the place one too many times. We actually like to relax a moment to finish our 2nd (or perhaps 3rd) margarita after dinner without getting the stink eye from the owner--who usually comes over to shake our hands when we arrive--or have tables pushed up against ours to make a larger table as we s... read more
Bravo for El Chavo! – ignore the barking below re 'being rushed', the place gets packed during prime dinner hours and i am sure the same people would complain if they had to wait long for a table...so let's keep to the facts - great authentic food, killer margaritas, friendly staff, impressive live guitar/singer and whimsical decor (what is the real dolly story anyway?) el chavo is one of the best mexican restaurants in LA.
No longer a fan – AfraidI have to agree with recent reviews. Have been going here for years but was recently subjected to an embarrasing and uncomfortable experience. Recommended it for friends to get together to celebrate a special occassion but we found ourselves being rushed out even before we completed our meals. The owner rudely told us we had been there too long and needed to leave. (Not even a semblance of cordiality and certainly no offer to have a drink in the bar) Yes, I know it was a busy weekend night, but as som... read more
Service Much Improved with Change of Ownership – Great margaritas at a resonable price. Excellent local Mexican food. A fun place to meet for dinner with friends.
going down – i too used to be a fan mostly because at one time the staff was very friendly and the margaritas were great. it was a place i would take my friends to introduce them to a cool place. but my last experience WAS my last. rude, almost aggressive, management, quick to try to get rid of you. never used to be like that. rufus wainwright is not an excuse to bully regular folks out. the new silverlake, i guess, too hip for its own good.
Still number one... – I'm not saying I've tried every Mexican restaurant in L.A., but I've tried quite a few and this one is still my favorite, even if it is far too crowded on weekends. If you want frou frou Border Grill style Mexican, stay away. Come for the carne asada -- the best in town. The margaritas -- good, strong, reasonably priced. I've always found the staff courteous. The one time we were asked to give up our table, the place was packed, we were clearly finished, and Rufus Wainwright wanted the table, so we coul... read more
