I originally just went for a 2nd opinion. But have now finally found a dental clinic I feel comfortable with. Enough so, that when I told my son about my appointment, he is checking to see if they are in his insurance network.
Polished teeth first before cleaning never had that done that way.

Yes, this is a new method. Current research has shown better results when you polish first. It similar to the concept that you "sweep before you mop." You want to sweep (polish) off the loose debris first before mopping (using the ultrasonic and hand instruments) to remove harder deposits.
