Editorial fromThe ambitious yet cozy Chestnut suffers from a bit of an identity crisis. Is it a special occasion spot in the Grocery vein (its Smith Street neighbor) or a more accessible everyday joint? The dining room, featuring spare white walls and…

Chef Care's So Much – The few times I've been here it is very evident that the chef takes tremendous pride in the food he serves. There are many touches at this place that I love: the handmade chocolates at the end of the dinner is just one of them. I feel many of the people who come here are regulars and don't want the place to get too busy--especially the bar where you can have a full dinner and still linger afterwards. I would consider Chestnut on the top of my list for a dinner date spot because the food is thoughtful an... read more

This is another reason why I live in Brooklyn – Food was all around fantastic and fairly priced. I will definately be back.

Great private party spot – This year my company decided to have a sit-down dinner for our holiday party, and we chose Chestnut on Smith. We had some finnickey requirements and last minute requests, but the staff at Chestnut always accommodating and friendly. For the event we had 45 minutes of mingling with passed appetizers (the duck confit and tuna tartar were my favorites). Then we all sat down in their lovely dining room (we easily fit 50 in there) for an entree and dessert. Everyone was blown away with their meal. I had ... read more

Don't Believe the Hype! – Chestnut seems to be living off years-old reviews and word-of-mouth referrals. The place is a Gordon Ramsey show waiting to happen. On a recent visit for brunch, my friend's poached eggs came out hard-boiled and my burger was cooked well-done, not "medium," as I had asked. We would have sent our food back, but we'd waited 45 minutes it and we were very hungry. The only thing good at this place is the mimosas and the Bloody Marys.

Woua !!! And I am not easily impressed... – For some odd reason, I have lived not too far from Chestnut for the past 3 years but had never eaten there. On Saturday night, four of us went there and had the tasting menu ($60) with wine paring ($30). It was simply put.... superb. I truly did not expect such innovative cuisine. The tasting menu was around 10-12 different small size dishes (we stopped counting), all of them innovative and soul filling. The Hanger steak (yes I know hanger steak) was amazing, the small chocolate ca... read more

Ridiculous food. They have something for everyone and it all tastes good. Sauces are rich but not too oily, the meats were perfectly cooked. Great wine list. Service was outstanding: waters were refilled quickly and the wait staff was unobtrusive. It is expensive but perfect for a special meal.

The beloved Carroll Gardens restaurant of the same name cracks open a tiny bar next door. – In keeping with the adjacent restaurant, Chestnut Bar champions a bevy of influences, dividing its rotating wine list into solid basics ("themes") and more exotic "variations." Part rustic hearth, part modern wine bar, this petite 20-stool nook of red brick and rough-hewn wood hugs close neighborhood 30-somethings looking for a lingering late night. A small, classically skewed cocktail menu delivers hefty 12-oz. doses of rum, gin and ... read more

Average.... – I found the Chestnut to be average. The service was pretty good but our main courses did take a long time. It would have been nice if the server let us know how long we would be waiting to eat. As for appetizers, the calamari, and the schrimps were my favorite. I had the pork as my main dish and it was a tad too salty. The wine list was nice and the mark up wasn't that bad. Overall, It wouldn't be my choice to go back. I would go back if my dinning companions were set on trying it. It wasn't bad but wasn't that... read more

happyjuice 8000 couldn't be more wrong!!! – I really think your review should be put directly in the trash. Every time we go we have a wonderful meal. The service is casual and friendly. The food can be a bit inconsistent if you go very often but never bad like you are describing. The thing that makes this place special is if you don't enjoy what you ordered and you say something they take extra care to see that you are happy with everything. I've never heard them say no...the last time I had something I didn't like (wine) t... read more
