The Cave of the Mounds is one of the most significant caves in the Midwest of the United States. The cave was believed to have formed nearly a million years ago, while the limestone encrustations around it are said to date back over 488 million years to the Ordovician Period. The cave was discovered by limestone quarry workers in 1939 and was opened to the public as a show cave in 1940. Particularly renowned for its brilliantly colored rock formations, the cave's insides are admirably embellished with everything from Soda St... read more

From that moment on he was excited about the cave. Our 4 year old was still scared a bit but he made it. What w... read more
This is a wonderful place to visit. The facts they communicate during the tour are very interesting and it's like a lost, untouched world. Cannot take a stroller in there so be prepared to carry your little kids for about an hour. Warm season offers more outdoor fun in addition to the caves, but I love that u can go all year. 50 degrees no matter when u go. One of life's little wonders.
Drove all the way from Canada to visit this place and I would do it again in a heartbeat. They were having a Halloween event when we went. The cave was lit up with a bunch of candles. It was beautiful. The staff were super friendly, and one guide in particular was so interesting we stayed for about 20 minutes just chatting with him. Overall an amazing experience and I reccomend everyone go spend some time there.
