About this business

Mexican cuisine restaurants have a new avenue to indulge in their favorite fare-Calavera. This restaurant opened its doors to the Uptown residents in 2015 and has gained much popularity in a short span of time. The restaurant has a humble and rustic decor with wooden furniture, bricked walls, a beautiful bar counter topped with leather, hummingbird hangings andalebrijes (Oaxacan folk art figurines). For the airy summers, there is a warm patio as well. The food is delicious- authentic Mexican flavors coupled with right season... read more

Crap business that is getting called out for wage theft, as well as stealing age old recipes from indigenous women only to fire them later. This place is garbage.

I find it fascinating that there is no verification of whether someone has eaten at a restaurant or not, and that reviews of said restaurant can be made by disgruntled employees and their disgruntled friends. I guess if you get enough people trolling on your side, you don't need pesky things like facts to stand in your way.

Calavera was a truly genuine experience. The staff and owners have gone out of their way to support the culture and help allow guests to also experience the culture. It was evident that an immense amount of care was taken to curate the perfect food and beverage menu while also ensuring that cutlery, various artifacts and the restaurant design also reflects the culture, theme and passion of the team running the restaurant.

All the staff were exceptional. However, the 36 ingredient mole was lacking in the most important ingredient: flavor. Maybe an off night. Loved the grasshoppers. Liked the place but still found it a little pricey. $8.00 for a side of beans...really??

This restaurant epitomizes cultural appropriation, the White entitlement of culture vultures, and the gentrification/displacement spilling into Oakland from SF and the tech sector. The owners recently fired many of the Indigenous Oaxacan workers and refuses to pay them the wages they earned ! This place is all bad!!! #BoycottCalavera #BoycottWageTheft #RestaurantWorkersMovement

Calavera has great cocktails and food in a cool, open atmosphere. I'm looking forward to spending some time on their patio during the summer. Highly recommended it. Don't believe the trash talk in the other reviews, they are completely misinformed.
