Excellent food and drinks – Visiting from out of town and located the Cafe Gutenberg for coffee and a nice lazy Sunday lunch. The menu was quite varied and our food was wonderful. In addition the coffee and drinks were top notch. Their beer list featured a wonderful selection of the world's best beers, from Schneider Aventinus to Bell's Oberon to Sam Smith's Oatmeal Stout. My wife was quite happy with their selection of champagne drinks. Lots of books and magazines to read and keep you entertained. The wait staff was friendl... read more
Hands down the best food in Richmond. Clearly influenced by European cuisine, but with new life breathed into it, and a reverance for the bounty of local ingredients in Virginia. A lot of people think European cuisine means repeating the classics. But these folks take the sentiment of Europes dedication to fine technique and apply it to Virginias natural offerings. Cafe Gutenberg is not only a great place to eat and drink, but a celebration of community and spirit. The menu is seasonal and inspired, and each dish really high... read more
Fresh, inspired food matches lovely atmosphere – This cafe is clearly ahead of its' time. I used to come for just coffee but had no idea how great their menu selection was. The mussel bisque was incredible and the fish was grilled and seasoned perfectly. They have an amazing beer list that is half price on Tuesdays. Unlike alot of restaurants, they pay attention to the details without being pretentious.
Terrible, snobby service. Always seem to be out of anything on the menu. – The service is snotty, the litchen is unable to accomodate simple requests because "the chef doesn't feel like it", and everything is overpriced. Spend your money in a place where you are appreciated as a customer.
Bad meal, limited menu – Cafe Gutenberg is cozy, but the food has really gone downhill recently. I had a terrible meal there - how can you mess up a salad? They're trying too hard with pretentious food, and it's failing. I used to recommend this place, but now I'd say save your money, because it is also overpriced, and the service is absolutely terrible.
try the chai and all the other java will rock your world
Most unique find – We stumbled on Cafe Gutenberg during a weekend stay in Richmond- and have to say it was definitely the culinary highlight of the trip, if not the overall highlight. The loveliness of the setting (cozy tables and booklined walls) was matched with delicious food. The fried green tomatoes with hearty breading, and the grilled corn salad that accompanied it, was wonderful, as was the cheese plate served with crackers, apricot spread, and grapes. This place is a gem.
Formerly Known As Main Street Grill – Lacks organization, the service ain't top, but the food, coffee, and wine are pretty good. There are books, too. I don't find myself going there too often, probably because it doesn't open till 11am on weekdays, which are the days I prefer going to get morning coffee.
