This was our second visit to the Bham VA Emergency Room in the last 18 months. Although the medical issue wasn’t “high level” compared to other veterans’ needs, we were still triaged and placed in a room very quickly. After a detailed examination, Dr. Myers did an outstanding job assessing the issue, ordering bloodwork, and thoroughly explaining everything. Last April I came in asking for help because I wanted to unalive myself after asking constantly for 4 months to have outpatient mental health treatment. The E.R. sent me to the mental health floor, and after 3 days, my freedom was taken away against my will as I was sent to Hillcrest Behavioral Hospital for 3 and a half weeks. My wife and I had to spend $1000+ of our own money for her Lyft rides since I am the only one on the fam that drives. All I wanted was outpatient mental health treatment. I have to share my personal experience with the Birmingham VA Emergency Room. I knew i had kidney stones, i had gotten an ultrasound earlier that week at a private clinic. I called the VA ER to get some guidance with our unique circumstances. My husband is a disabled veteran & requires around the clock care/assistance. I am his caregiver as well as a veteran. I’m a disabled retired afghan vet I’ve been in this system for like 11 years I have never asked or botherd the VA through a lot of turmoil but the last few months my feet hurt so bad at night sometimes takes my breath away I don’t know what’s going on I’ve went to walk in clinic at red clinic finally got a podiatry appointment in line it’s a month away I can’t do this for a month I called up there cause I’m an hour away and I’m at a loss for words I am so greatful for my service to this country but free medical it’s like a f... read more
