Whether you're an Ethiopian food buff or a neophyte, Asmara will come as a pleasant surprise. The food is classic Ethiopian, with excellent tebsy (pan roasted strips of beef), ketfo (chopped beef tenderloin with cottage cheese), and, of course, the ubiquitous injera (a flat, spongy bread used to pick up food in lieu of silverware). The inside is quite dark, and, depending on your mood, that can be either oppressive or intimate. If you're inclined to feel gloomy, one way to flip the mood around is to order some delicious hone... read more

First experience eating Ethiopian cusine – I tried Asmara Restaurant for the first time. I have never eaten Ethiopian food and was very pleased with the my order at Asmara's. The lentils were delicious, just the right amount of spices. The atmosphere is quiet and cozy. Perfect for a couple or large group. The servers were very pleasant. The only aspect that I didn't like is the bread. It reminded me of a pancake. Other than that, everthing was great.
One of our favorite restaurants – What more can I say other than I love this place. Tasty cuisine and spices you can discern. Fantastic service from the waitresses and the owner ALWAYS stops by each table for a quick and friendly hello. But again, it's the food that's the draw for me.
pushy waitresses, mediocre food – I've been here three times and each time the waitresses kept pushing our groups to order more food even though we didn't want or need any more. And each time we didn't the waitresses would get a pretty snotty attitude. I like taking people there because it's at least a different type of food, but next time I will definitely look for another Ethiopian restaurant. I thought the food was ok and the price is reasonable, my main problem is that they are very pushy about ordering more food and try... read more
Good Food, Comfortable Atmosphere – Asmara restarurant at the corner of 51st and Telegraph is worth visiting. I am hesitant to write this review, because I don't want my find to become a hot-spot. I like the quiet, never overcrowded atmosphere of the main room. The main room (in the front door) is in strict contrast to the bright, white, loud bar area to the right of the main room.
Intimate and cozy, great food – This is a great date place. Unlike Blue Nile, it is not crowded and noisy on weekend nights. Rather it is intimate and cozy. The food is delicious. It is also sensuous to eat w/ your hands, plus the honey wine is a great compliment to any meal here. Sometimes the service can be a little slow, so it may not be the place to go if you are in a hurry.
