Wasn't like it used to be. – Before this place got renovated the food was great but now, i think the food is priced too high for the amount and quality of food. There are far better Mex restaurants out there. I used to love the enchilada plate but now they jip you on rice and beans. The tacos i used to love but the meat just isn't flavored well. I absolutely love the Ice tea. And another negative is the tables are very small.
Excellent – When I eat at Amaya's it reminds me of eating with my family. The chicken tacos are delicious and are made the way they should be...frying a tortilla and not using a taco shell from a box.
"Killer" Tacos?? – I have never before seen corn "crispy" tacos that were not in the lease crispy. They were large, but the tortillas were flabby, the meat was so-so, and the cheese was pure grease. How can people rate this place so highly? I just wasted $10 on a dinner that was not as good as Taco Cabana even. For my money, Chuy's has the best tacos in town that I have found yet.
You don't come here for the atmosphere. You don't come to stare at the pretty people. You come here for something you can't get anywhere else in Austin. Killer tacos. If you get anything else you missed the point.
School Cafeteria Enchiladas – Okay, if you like Matt's, then you'll like this place. My friend and I both agreed that the enchiladas were just the same thing we got in high school. Rice was so overdone and sticky, the scoop actually cut rice in half and was a perfecty formed gloppy blob. Food for the masses.
Food to die for and SMOKEFREE! – Like any good restaurant, Amaya's doesn't allow toxic tobacco smoke. We always stop by to eat on our way from North Texas to San Antonio. Terrific Mexican food!
Best Nachos Compuestos – Amaya's is an Austin tradition for more than 20 years. This family-run establishment has the best nachos compuestos in town. Try them and you will turn your nose up at all the rest. Also good are the enchiladas and the menudo.
What is the hype about? – We were brought here by friends that RAVED about this food so we were expecting some good eats. Guys, this is some cheap ingredients. What is the deal with the cheese? I paid $9 for a lunch entree that was worth a Panchos price.
