The store carries a full selection of books on climbing routes and mountaineering, gear for mountaineering and backpacking, hiking boots, outerwear, Nordic skis and accessories. Sea kayaks are available for purchase or for rent (during the summer). The staff is a group of consummate outdoors people who are climbing and hiking specialists and happy to help you craft your very own extreme Alaskan adventure.

RecommendedI’ve been going to AMH for 20years and they continue to provide outstanding service and technical gear especially for xc skiing and mountaineering. I have been delighted to see that even with the transition in ownership of this small business, they still have many of the familiar smiling faces and they continue to be the first to step up and generously support our outdoor community and racing scene. I always make them my first stop when checking for gear before looking anywhere else!
Nobody's perfect, but they're one of the best locally owned stores for outdoor gear in Anchorage! I would recommend them for high quality skiing, climbing, and hiking gear any day.
Excellent and knowledgeable staff plus the best selection of high end gear in the state. If you are a seasoned outdoor enthusiast looking for something specific, they’ll have it or they’ll happily special order it for you. If you’re a looking to get into something new, be it climbing, skiing or packrafting the staff will work with you to figure out what your needs and goals are and make sure you are kitted out in the right way.
Knowledgeable staff and great products. I always get my darn tough socks there!! It’s a friendly experience every time I have popped in.
After reading about the woman’s experience trying to find gear that fits and your clerks response that women that need larger gear don’t belong in sports, I will never darken your door. This attitude is unacceptable and degrading. Too bad you can’t make your staff understand customer service. Even worse that you deliberately exclude certain sizes based on misguided notions about women’s bodies. Do not recommend.

One of the best shops in Alaska in every sport they cater to. One of the most knowledgeable staffs I’ve seen with plenty of people on the floor ready to help.
