Yamashiro - My Favorite L.A. Restaurant – Yamashiro is a rarity in L.A., because it's a pre-1950's building that has actually been appreciated and preserved -- not torn down and rebuilt like the rest of the city. The unique, Japanese-style structure has quite a history (read about it at the Yamashiro restaurant website and take a very cool virtual tour); originally a private mansion, then an exclusive club for the Hollywood elite, and a military academy before becoming the beautiful restaurant it is today. The Hollywood hill... read more
PG. Amm!!! I went to Yamashiso once in last year. It was good atmosphere but the price was so high. So how it is, you pay for beauty. Now I try Thai restaurant in Van nuys name is ThaiTomYum. I love this place czt I can afford it. The food is dilicious and people very friendly. wonderful atmosphere. very relaxing in this place.
Totally Surprised – I went there on a Wednesday night with my husband and found out that they have a movie night every Wednesday. I asked someone how much it costs and they said it was complimentary. The movie was set up in a separate room off the bar area. After talking to the hostess we found out they where playing Caddyshack (which is totally one of the funniest movies ever) and that there were two showings. We were going to eat before the movie until the hostess said that there are table set up for you to eat during the ... read more
A Night to Remeber – After reading the reviews on some of the websites I was skeptical about going to this place. but I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the bad reviews were full of it. As soon as I got there the Hostess smiled and said hello (very genuinely, not Hollywood fake). It was a Saturday so we did have to wait about 10 minutes for out table. But if you have ever eaten out in this town before that is short compared to most places. We waited in the bar and got some cocktails I got one that I think was called... read more
Average Food, Spectacular View, Great Service, Very Friendly Valet) – I have been to many Japanese restaurants and I must say that this restaurant in terms of food is sub-par for the prices. What you're really paying for is the view of Los Angeles metro, which is stunning. When I went there, I was seriously hoping that the food would be really great even though I've read many reviews on the restaurant from this site. It was one of the restaurants on my "potential graduation dinner location" list. It is now off the list. The ... read more
The location alone is worth seeing once – I was blown away the first I went to Yamashiro...by the Japanese style architecture and wonderful view. While the food was less awe-inspiring, it wasn't BAD, just overpriced for what it was. Still, I like to take out of town guests there, simply for the "wow factor." ALTHOUGH, they have the BEST sorbet trio for dessert. I'm generally not a "dessert person," but this particular treat haunts my dreams...mmmmm... The service is always excellent. It's worth going at least once.
Mothers' Day 2008 - Ehhh, OK. – Yamashiro Restaurant is a "CalAsian" restaurant up in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles, CA. Great views. Great Atmosphere, Incredible service - but just OK food even though the Mothers' Day buffet presentation was beautiful. When you are about to spend this much money ($400 with tip for 5 people) you expect substantially more in the overall food quality. The sushi section was beautifully presented but the ingredients were mediocre at best and pedestrian in quality and taste. I mean 3/4" diam... read more
Excellent food, Service just okay – My boyfriend and I went here for dinner a couple of weeks ago and loved the food and atmosphere. He ordered sashimi and loved it. I ordered a chicken dish (I don't eat seafood) and I enjoyed it as well. Also, our crispy shrimp appetizer and chocolate souffle dessert were very delicious. My only complaint was our server Michael. Immediately upon meeting him we felt that he lacked any personality. We tried to ignore this, but I was extremely disappointed in the lack of service we received fr... read more
only go for the view – they don't have to try to pretend they have good sushi or other dishes or drinks or anything else b/c of their location & the view. it's all tourists & novice sushi eaters inside, and once you're drunk off of their mediocre cocktails & sake, the view & dim lighting become even more intoxicating. definitely walk around outside in their japanese garden & absorb the ambience before getting wasted. the sushi's not bad but not great either and they know it too.
