First time was excellent...sort of.. – First off, I gotta say the food was excellent. The hostess took forever to seat us even though tables were open, but the food was excellent. The ambiance was great, the decor is kool and price pioint is ok. I was actually SUPER impressed by the busboy who actually did the waiters job during our dinner. He was a young Hispanic guy and was Johnny on the spot with refilling water for me and my people. The waiter seated us but didnt check in until we asked for the check. We ate and talked fo... read more
Citysearch Editorial Review – It's hard to go wrong with the classics, and owners Dylan Dodd, who also runs Barrio Chino, and Danny Minch, a former bartender at Balthazar, cater to the Williamsburg young things that want to kick it old school. Every night crowds pour in for former chef Justin Ernsberger's double-cut pork chop, filet mignon French dip sandwich and fried half-chicken, as well as for the substantial raw bar. The ambiance--masculine details like dark maple floors, green leather booths and a moustachioed, mostly ... read more
Good but needs to work on consistency – I live in the neighborhood so frequent the restaurant often. If you go on a slow night, you are sure to get a good meal. However, if the place is ever busy, you are sure to get undercooked or rushed food. Point in case - the fillet on a good night can be one of the best you have ever had. On the contrary, if the kitchen is busy - instead of taking the time to cook it right, they sear it on the outside and you get incredibly raw meat on the inside. This has happened every time for me in... read more
Used to be awesome. Used to be... As of July 2009 the ownership and the chef have changed, sadly for the worst. I frequented Walter Foods regularly after they opened. The food and service was always on point. The food has dramatically changed, our courses took phenomenally long to arrive (in an uncrowded restaurant) and we were served bad oysters (I believe from Hood Point) after I asked if they were fresh. Save your money and avoid it for the dismal experience it has become.
Good, but skip the weekends – Walter Foods is a welcome though somewhat mediocre addition to the neighborhood. I?ve been three times and will likely continue to patronize the place, but probably only on slow week nights. I?ll repeat what others have said before ? the turn over is SLOW. The best part about the place is the friendly staff that seems genuinely apologetic for the extraordinarily long wait for a table. I?m not opposed to waiting when I know there is something to be gained from it, but I find the food to be nothin... read more
ABSOLUTELY the best new place to eat in brooklyn – I was so blown away when I went there a few weeks ago. Everything on the menu was absolutely divine. Justin Ernsberger has really done a fantastic job with every entree he presents. The surf and turf is so flavorful, and cooked so perfectly, it just melts in your mouth. The interior is also very cozy, and inviting, especially on these cold winter nights. The dark black wood finish, contrasts with the clean white napkins and dinner plates. The servers are very helpful and see... read more
These guys got it right. – This is my first review on citysearch, but it's also one of the few times I actually felt compelled to write a review. I LOVE WALTER FOODS. My partners and I frequent this place (our store is right across the street) after we finish long nights at the office. The atmosphere is comforting - makes me wish my living room was Walter Foods. The menu is straightforward and has exactly what I want on it - raw oysters, meat, and potatoes. The specials are on point. If you see fritters on the specials menu,... read more
Love the place – Been to Walter Foods a handful of times and and am confused by the negative comments. I've only had positive experiences there. Is it perfect? Of course not.. They are new, and where most new restaurants miss, they have nailed it. Long waits are expected, especially on the weekends, and they need to do a better job with quoting the wait times..but a new restaurant with long waits is most likely a good sign.. This means they are busy. I don't want to wait either which is why I eat out early in the week. I'm s... read more
Charming, cozy nook – I've had multiple excellent experiences at Walter Foods, and am surprised to see any negative comments here. It may get really busy on weekends, but I think it's well worth the wait. It's such a warm, comfortable place, it doesn't feel like Brooklyn at all. The last time i was there, while waiting at the bar for my table, the (handsome) bartender made a delicious Mint Julep, and made sure I was well taken care of. The food is always delicious, and I highly recommend the warm beet salad. The specials I'v... read more
