If you dine at only one restaurant in NYC make this the place – My wife and I get to NYC only once or twice a year and try to vary the restaurants we go to as much as possible. A couple of years ago we went to Union Square and now we never miss it, no matter what else we have to give up. Not only is the food superb - the halibut was probably the best thing I've ever eaten - the service and comfort level are beyond compare. So many celebrity chefs overextend themselves and fail to live up to their lofty reputations. Michael R... read more

Lives up to its rep! – Believe the hype. This is the place to go for a special night out when you're prepared to spend a lot of time (and money) savoring a really good meal. The duck was fantastic, the staff is polite and extremely knowlegeable, and yet the place is completely unpretentious. It's a winner.

Great service but over-hyped food. – I went here for dinner last weekend and I thought the service was very good but was a bit disappointed with the food. My boyfriend and I shared the side dish of spinach as an appetizer. It was very tasty but we both found it to be overly salty, which was unfortunate because the underlying flavor was perfect but was a little overshadowed by the salt. I ordered the pasta appetizer as my main course and felt it was fine but very ho-hum and would not order it again. My boyfriend ordered the l... read more

So-so food and truly terrible service – Admittedly a last minute booking, so wasn't too surprised or disappointed to be seated upstairs in the pokey 'garden' section - best avoided if you book ahead. Front of house staff were excellent, but after that the service (for which this place is supposedly famous) took a nose dive. Our waiter was brusque and inept consistently throughout the meal: leaning over me to clear bread/side plates while I was eating, removed my plate as I was finishing the last mouthful; didn't even wait fo... read more

solid good food – walked in one evening without a reservation and they were really great-- accomodating us so that we sat in the dining room. been meaning to try this place for years but never got around to it until recently. i can understand why it was and is one of the city's top places to dine years ago-- it's still very very good (although the cuisines are now all about creativity and uniqueness). i would definitely go back, but there are so many places yet to try... i'm glad i was able to dine here finally, and they des... read more

disappointing – Went for lunch yesterday with a 2:15 reservation. The place was packed with no real place to wait ( you can only sit at the bar if you are having lunch) we waited for 20 minutes and finally I approached the hostess to ask how much longer we would have to wait. She apologized and immediately seated us at a table that had been vacant the entire time. Our waiter informed us that they ran out of the lunch special and brought me the worst Cosmoplitan I ever tasted(murky and the only taste was lime) He never asked ... read more

Great business lunch spot – Dined here with two colleagues (one used to work in the kitchen there) for lunch and we ordered a feast: calamari (nicely crispy batter that stayed intact through proding and dipping in a very tasty aioli), gruyere salad (perfectly dressed leaves generously topped with thin shreds of nutty cheese), arugula salad (reportedly lacked the pepperyness that makes the leaves so craveable), porcini gnocchi (different, with mushroom pieces in the dough as well as the sauce, and the sauce was creamy and ric... read more

Classic Fine Dining – Union Square Cafe is one of my all time favorites. It is always a garunteed fabulous meal (the duck is amazing!) and the staff has manners every parents should teach their children! It's classy and sophisticated without being stuffy, pretentious or unapproachable. Definitely go if you want a fabulous dinner, in a beautiful restaurant with a mature, well-heeled crowd.
