During those days Novocaine was beginning to be applied with hesitation by most Dental doctors (because of possible unexpected adverse reactions and used only sparingly), there were no high speed refrigerated tooth drills and none of the technological advances dentists use today to make dental procedures less irritant or painful to their patients (and himself).
