This popular tourist attraction is a bit more famous than your standard diner. The coffee is hot and the food is better-than-average, but that's to be expected in NYC. What sets Tom's Restaurant apart is its pop culture history. This diner, in business since the 1940s, served as the model for the diner on Seinfeld, where the gang spent every day discussing shrinkage, puffy shirts and, you know, "yada yada yada."

Beware stray ingredients and bad service – I ordered a chicken feta wrap and it had BACON in it! And when I called the waitress over to verify, she didn't even apologize, even when I explained that I don't eat pork. She said she'd tell the man at the register, but when we went to pay, he only knocked $2 off the entire bill of my friends and my food! It wasn't like I found an awry piece of cabbage--pork products are a big deal--particularly in NYC.
Rude rude rude – I frequent this restaurant because I think the food is decent and I live around the area. However, until this Saturday noon I had never experienced such rude service at a restaurant. I was eating with 3 other friends. We finished and within a couple of minutes, the waitress hands us our check and the owner (I later asked the waitress about his role) came to us and said to the effect "Are you guys done yet? Because I have a of people waiting outside. Please hurry up" We just finished eating!! And the table ne... read more
Standard, standard with a popular tag. – It's a pretty standard diner. The menu isn't extensive but the food was pretty good for diners and decently priced. As for the waitstaff, they were standard--not too nice, not too friendly, can be at times nice, rude, etc. I would say everything about this place is pretty average for a diner. The one thing that sets it apart from the rest of the diners out there is the popularity thing tagged to it (The show Seinfeld used the restaurant's name). The inside looks nothing like how it lo... read more
Surprisingly Good – I say, "surprisingly" because after reading the reviews on here I was kind of dreading it. But the service was quick and friendly - what more could you ask? There was too much choice on the menu and the prices were good, I thought. I tipped $7 (I can't remember how much the meal was, I think the tax was less than $2, so I hope it was good!) and asked when I paid if $7 sounded okay, to be told it was too much!! My only advice is - GO HUNGRY - the portions there are killer. I thought I was going to the elec... read more
Surprisingly Good – We were pleasantly surprised to find the food at Tom's to be incredibly tasty. We ordered the chicken fingers, pastrami, fries, chicken noodle soup, pancakes, chocolate milkshake and chocolate ice cream. All of these basics were done very well. Especially enjoyable were the chicken fingers which were the best we had ever had. The coating was golden brown and crispy, and the chicken was juicy, tender and flavorful. We will most certainly return to try other enticing menu options.
Gross Food – There is bad food, and there is unedible food. The food here is unedible. The servers are stupid and dont take notice of anything you need. take a pretty picture of the outside and walk on by.
Possibly the worst food I have had in NYC – I don't care about its Seinfeld history - the food absolutely disgusting. I wouldn't eat there if it was free.
Prominently featured on "Seinfeld," this diner, in real life, caters to Columbia students filling up on cheap comfort food. – The Scene Columbia academics, local hospital workers and tourists who snap pictures by the famous neon sign outside flock here daily. The clean, sunny interior looks nothing like Jerry and the gang's dingy haunt, but it showcases fun ephemera like "Seinfeld" cast autographs and press clips on how the diner inspired the musical ode by Suzanne Vega. The Food Expect standard burgers, gyros, triple-decker... read more
Not worth it – Too bad there's not that many 24 hour diners in this area, because sometimes it feels like you're forced to go there when you need a quick meal. I find their prices to be jacked up way too much. This is most likely because: 1. Columbia University is right they and they may feel students have money for pay that tuition, then they can afford an overpriced meal. 2. Seinfeld. Their "claim to fame". It's even more horrible that they get away with it. I've been to this dinner a handful of times, and I've never been ... read more
