Tomoe Sushi

4.5

About this business

This tiny, local restaurant in Soho has a strong following of devoted sushi-lovers from the neighborhood. The decor is simple, but the freshness and selection of fish is what keeps diners coming back. For non-sushi lovers, there are some good dumplings and cold noodle dishes. Reasonable prices and good service make this one of the most affordable sushi restaurants in this expensive neighborhood.

Best Sushi in Downtown, handsdown – I'm a Los Angeles native who is used to the unbelievable abundance of exceptional sushi out west. I've spent 2 years sampling the various sushi spots all over the NYC, and nothing really came close to the high quality that is so pervasive in LA. That is, until I went to Tomoe. This tasty spot had some of the best Toro I've ever had, and it wasn't a den of hobnobery and snobish pretension as is common on the upper east. Anyone who complains about waiting in line isn't a true New Yorker, as ... read more

Fresh inventive sushi rolls!! – Went there EARLY (immediately after work) on a weeknight near the end of 2006. No problems getting a table (but be warned - you will NOT get seated until everyone in your party is there, even for a table for 2!!). The sushi rolls were fresh and quite flavorful. My friend suggested the fish soup (sounded "odd") but I tried it. Huge chunks of salmon and something else (cod?) swimming in a rich miso soup. What a delight on a cold night! You aren't coming here for the ambiance or decor. Face it - ... read more

Consistently Excellent – Friends and I treat ourselves to Tomoe when we are in the mood for perfect sushi/sashimi. This place is spot on with fresh and delicious food every visit. The lines are long but worth the wait. The green tea is excellent and not overpowering as at some other restaurants. Despite the hoards waiting, wait staff never rushes you out if you want to order some to start and more as dinner progresses. Sashimi is nicely sized but nothing grossly out of proportion that you can't consume in one bite. Sushi lov... read more

Best Japanese food in town – The fish is sooo fresh and juicy. Waiters are nice. No rushing out. Very nice experience!! Will go back again no matter how long is the waiting.

Great big soft sushi! – I don't know how they do it, but every bite of almost every piece of sashimi resulted in a little piece of heaven melting in my mouth. The cooked appetizers were great as well, definitely try the grilled yellowtail neck & the sea bass. Very friendly service as well, as we sat down & ate for almost 2 hours without being rushed, even though there was a line forming outside.

Huge Sashimi, excellent handrolls – i love this place..and its absolutely worth the wait. anyone who suggests Sushi Samba over Tomoe has absolutely no clue what theyre talking about. I have never experienced a insect problem there..but then again i may not try as hard to be high society as some of the other reviewers.

bring your flyswatter – i tried to turn a blind eye to the conditions but it's almost impossible. Gnats by the 100's buzzing, hovering, and landing on your food, face, and drink, make it difficult to concentrate on anything else. If layers of dust, dirt, and insects tend to bother you, then either don't look up or down or take the trek down to sushi samba. If you feel it makes it authentic to have broken edged glasses and the prior patron's food on your table, then by all means get in that line now and enjoy. The food itself... read more

TO DIE FOR TORO -- worth the wait!! – PHENOMENAL SUSHI AND SASHIMI! For an appetizer, I recommend the soft shell crab with ponzu sauce, which was excellent - the perfect contrast of texture and flavor. We also ordered the yellow tail and toro sashimi, both were huge pieces of fish were sliced perfectly! The toro (fatty tuna) was the highlight of the meal - an exquisite piece of fish that melts in your mouth like filet mignon. The maki rolls were all incredibly fresh and delicious - DEFINITELY WORTH THE WAIT!

Overhyped and overpriced – Yes, sushi was fresh and tasty. Just like in a lot more other restaurants where you don't have to wait outside for 30 minutes and then sit in a crammy tiny room. So if you want to enjoy your dinner, eat elsewhere. But if you believe in the so-called "hipness" - then join the queue!
