Tomoe Sushi

4.5

About this business

This tiny, local restaurant in Soho has a strong following of devoted sushi-lovers from the neighborhood. The decor is simple, but the freshness and selection of fish is what keeps diners coming back. For non-sushi lovers, there are some good dumplings and cold noodle dishes. Reasonable prices and good service make this one of the most affordable sushi restaurants in this expensive neighborhood.

Really Really Good – This sushi place is very authentic. The food is delicious but its not a romantic date spot. Check out all the menus around the walls

Rude wait staff – After we had been there only 55 minutes, the waitress asked us to leave because there was a long line outside. The sushi is good, but the service is so bad that it's not worth it.

Average sushi, high price, HORRIBLE customer service – I've been a fan of Tomoe for over 10 years and I have to say that I will NOT go back there again. I have noticed a gradual decline in food quality, service and an increase in prices. There are plenty of sushi options in this city and I would rather spend my money elsewhere. About two weeks ago, I visited Tomoe with a friend, we were seated quickly but then the experience started to go downhill. After we were seated, we were ignored by the wait staff, we had to flag down ... read more

Extra nice for regulars, not so much for everyone else – I absolutely love Tomoe. When I get the chance, I come here often because it is right around the corner from my school, NYU Stern. The maki seems to always be negi- style and the fish seems extra oily but not fishy. Particularly fresh. It is a nice change-up from my normal places Blue Ribbon and Yama. If they have the fresh soft-shell crab I recommend it, but be weary, the one in the roll is not the freshest one, its the frozen one, so get the appetizer version. It isn... read more

Average sushi at best at high prices – I had high expectations for this place, seeing that its a local favorite with 4 1/2 stars. From the minute I walked in, I thought I was in the wrong place. This place is way too cramped. I was forced to sit next to somone who was maybe 6 inches away from me (not in my party) who ate the smelliest food I've ever smelled. I like to be able to eat my meal without hitting someone at the table next to me with my elbows. The waiters were rude, the food was barely average and the prices were t... read more

Worst experience in NYC – This is the worst sushi expereince I had in NYC. I am a japanese who have high standard for sushi. Tomoe sushi is horrible. The fishes at the sushi bar are fresh. However, it's the amazingly bad sushi chef who ruined everything. The sushi at supermarket are even better. The day I went, there were 3 inexperienced sushi chef.(One Mexican, one Chinese, one unknown). No offense, but the way they handled sushi is humuliating to sushi. If you have a second and go take a look at bar, how the 3 chef made su... read more

Great NYC restaurant, always a good experience – The line outside is worth it. I love taking people visiting NYC to this restaurant, this is a "local's place." The sushi is not the best there is - but for the price it's terrific.

Tomoe-fresh, fun and unforgettable sushi! – The ultimate sushi place!! I have never had sushi that melts in your mouth like I've had at Tomoe. The food was awesome and sooo fresh! The presentation, service and food were outstanding. Place is small but cozy with no frills. I came here with a Tomoe regular who has been coming here since back in his college days. Come here early, as I've seen the tables fill up quickly and heard there's a line that usually is out the door and down the street...

Totally worth the wait – It seems as though this place is packed every night of the week. The sashimi, fried soft shell crab, giant clam soup, and spicy toro tartar are always fresh and definitely what I keep going back there for. I have yet to explore the whole menu, but almost everything I have tried is outstanding! If you haven't tried it, you must. You're definitely missing out on a great find.
