Our Favorite for Years! Wow, I don't know what kind of problem some people have with this place, but we eat there every time we come to Portsmouth, about once a month for 3 years. Once & a while the wait staff is too few for a large crowd. Yes, they might be pierced, tattooed, & have funky clothing. That, along with the 60's yard sale decorations, is all part of the great atmosphere. And the food is always unique (especially the specials) and great quality. Large portions, too & worth the price. We're in our 50's, and our te... read more
the mostly gross Seriously, me and ALL of my friends refer to this as the mostly gross or the moldy toast. That pretty much says it all I think. The bathroom smells like sour milk and when you eat there you enevitably end up in the bathroom...sick. The only thing worse than a stinky painful trip to the bathroom is the fact that you can't shampoo the stink of the place out of your hair for days. I had to wash clothes twice to get the smell out. If you look close enough you can see that this place will one day end up a burning... read more
Friendly Toast is the best around! We love this place! We live 3.5 hrs away but any time we are driving by we are stopping there. I am in love with Friendly Toast. The decor is cool, the staff nice, and the food is amazing! Every meal we have had is delicious and I recommend it to everyone!
Phenomenal food, funky atmosphere, waiters march to their own beat I think a couple of the reviews below are shills for the competition. I have been going to "The Toast" for 10 yrs or so. I have taken 50 to 60 guests there as well, ranging from college students to business associates to elderly parents. The results are always the same - repeat customers. A friend comes up from NY for the weekend, and he'll want to eat there 3 times. A business associate from Boston, every time he comes to town for lunch. My wife's friends fr... read more
get a job in a side show! 45 min. wait...cold coffee...hippie-hair on my hashbrowns..attitude...this place is a pig pen!! a joke!!..ewwwww!!..why is it sooo coool to be rude? you can have your emo-vegan eatery!!.............
Disgustng on every level How this place has not been closed down by the health dept, has got me baffled, as for the previous review, "antique cups and plate's"? are you kidding, dirty, disgusting, chipped and broken , old ,plastic cups and plate's out of a garage sale from hell. I have been there a number of times by default as Ive been forced to meet friends there. The staff are not friendly to anyone who does not look as though they have bathed in a year and has at least half their body dipped in tattoo ink.The food is alway... read more
cool decor We have been here a number of times and the food has ALWAYS been great. I get the best sandwich called the Matt #2 (I think # 2!) The wait staff look a bit different than the "average" person, but judging people by how they look is a big mistake in my book. The walls are covered with cool things to look at, I always find something new. I would recommend this restaurant and I have.
friendly toast I admire the concept of what it is, but I feel there should be another themed restaurant around promoting a new avant guard. 1950s white suburban culture on meets Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is kinda cool, but how about 1950s beat culture with sparse (heroin chic) look is that still in style with images of Charlie Parker jumping off a train in the midwest looking for Junk. His drummer brings him back in cause aint no crap out there. One idea or something like that ya dig?
Good food, good people. The menu is huge. Creative and unique, and most importantly, delicious. I feel bad for the waitstaff who get all these bad reviews. Have you watched them run around on a Sunday morning? They are workin' their butts off. I've always had extremely friendly service. And hink about it - you'd probably just smile and nod too when the customer you're waiting on looks at you like a circus freak. I mean come on. I've even heard these customers be rude to the waitstaff. No food is ever dropped on their laps. J... read more
